The young guy and his gal are cruising along when his car sputters out. She gets out, reaches under the car and comes up with a ton of black goo in her hand!

I was pretty young at the time of these airings and cannot connect what the advertised oil brand was...

Any one remember this TV commercial from the late 50's - early 60's?

I want to say Valvoline but I just can't remember specifically.

I remember when young (early 80's) my father was always under the impression that valvoline had the most/best/only 'detergent' oils... his info base was likely made in the 60's...

Black goo doesnt equate with detergency, so maybe it was valvoline!

I couldnt say though.

Dayum!

I can recall that, even the big white convertible they used. Guy and girl are parked for necking; his car won't start; she climbs out and hands him the oil filter, spreading black goop everywhere!

Can't recall the brand. Was it for oil, though, or for filters? AC Delco filters, maybe? Or Valvoline oil?

Might have been a Stan Freberg-produced spot, or one of the clever ones written by Mike Nichols and Elaine May. (But I'm pretty sure they weren't the actors in the spot.)

For some reason I seem to recall the actor's name as "Morty Gunty." Googling brought up this:

Scroll down a little. That pic matches my (admittedly dim) memory of the spot.

The Internet Movie Database also mentions that Morty was the original Buddy Sorrell, the role made famous on "The **** Van Dyke Show" by Morey Amsterdam, on its previous incarnation, "Head of the Family" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0455118/ ).

No idea of who the girl in the spot could have been, though.
