Who is extending oil use???

There is still the temptation to change and experiment but I'm getting much better.

Why do we have a 6 month limit on conventional oils? After looking at the used oil analysis postd here, it seems that most conventional oil used oil analysis out to 6 months are fine, yet rarely does one push past 6 months...

Me and the Buick have an agreement. Every three thousand miles in as many months as it takes to get there. At 12 years, 367,000 miles on conventional and Purolator filters, we get along just fine.

Same thing with the transmission. Every 75k miles it gets a fresh filter and fill.

No rebuilds, just the cruddy intake gaskets I've done twice. Because of the porous nature of these engines, I know no matter what I do it's going to get coolant in there somewhere. I feel a lot safer with the shorter intervals.

On the other hand, my other cars that don't see as much driving get a twice a year change, usually at or above 3k miles. My saturn is a pain to change (Have to remove the pass. side tire) so I usually do a full synthetic and let it go about 6 or 7k. I have to top up so much anyway I figure this is pretty much safe.

See thats the thing. If changing the oil/used oil analysis and home brews is becoming a hobby to some of you, your not going to want to wait out an extended drain, lol.

Thats ok though.

For me, I live in a condo, me and my fiancées car gets an oil change every october, which ends up being 10k-15k for each of us. Since I have to take a trip to my father's property to do the two vehicles at once,(not allowed to change oil in our condo complex) my dodge truck and her saturn, I am thrilled that I only do it once a year. With the cost of oil and fuel today, you cant loose doing an extended drain. It cost me about $90 a year for the two vehicles in total.

It seems Mobil 1 Extended Performance is very popular in my area, and it seems hard to find on the shelves (5w30 or 10w30) nearly every october.

I think just for the sake of not running around, I may switch to amsoil, and get it shipped to my place in the future.

Ah, baby ..you're talking my language

I really think that most of our "running around" habits can be traced to when we were forced to go to Kmart and found the "man section" the only thing we could relate to. It then became a Saturday morning ritual ..to do the "man thing" ..and that, naturally, means you come home with "good stuff". If you can break out of the mandatory auto-parts store trip (as a "ritual") then it can change your perspective on how much of a pain you think mail order oil is.
