Which oils keep things cleaner?

I mean as in which oils have you folks used that keeps your engines clean. I always thought a quality conventional or synthetic at say 5k oci's would do that.

Rotella and diesel oils keep your engine pretty clean. I used Rotella 15W-40 and 10W-30 to get a filthy Briggs riding mower very clean on the inside after a couple seasons.

I don't think any modern spec oils will dirty an engine unless abused. Your second sentence is correct.

I'd guess oils that best keep critical areas of pistons and rings clear aren't necessarily the same ones that best keep more accessible regions looking clean. Right or not?

Is that good or bad?

The oil in my Rav gets very dark after a couple thousand miles and always has since it was new. The oil in my Camry and Corolla stay very light colored throughout the OCI.. I don't think it means anything.

I think it depends on the engine. On the Elantra, any oil turns dark in a few thousand miles at 13k miles with oil changed at 3,750. On a Lexus RX300 I serviced, oil was not very dark on dipstick at 5k with various synthetic oils.

That could very well be, along with a slew of other things. It does get darker, but it takes thousands of miles, like your Lexus.

I believe Dave at Redline recommended running Pennzoil Ultra before using Redline motor oil if your engine needed cleaning. I read that on BITOG. Not first hand information.

I don't think I've ever read that on here, nor would it make sense. Redline's POE would be more effective at cleaning than anything put in your typical PCMO designed to simply keep things clean.

Mobil 1 ESP in 0W-30 has MB 229.51 certification, for diesel use...

Really starting to like this oil..

Put a thousand miles on it in two weeks, averaged around 40 MPG...
