Which Mobil 1 5W-30 oil?

M1 comes in a number of different formulations. While I can appreciate that the "regular" formula is perfectly adequate for 5k changes, I can't help but wonder why that would be the choice when the Extended Performance version is only $2 more.
Money is not the issue, especially a few bucks.

At first, even though I'm going to do my oil and filter changes every 5,000± miles. I was thinking either Mobil 1 5W-30 Extended Performance or Valvoline 5W-30 Extended Protection. Both are very common and readily available in my area. Just wanted to see what others thought about it.

Thanks, NYH1.

If you are stuck on Mobil-1....
Mobil-1 EP Triple Action
Mobil-1 ESP
Those two I like the best. Coming in at #3 is Mobil-1 Euro 0w40, a little thicker than 5w30.

Valvoline EP 5w-30 is my first choice and is a good oil, or Mobil EP is fine also, if you want the Quaker State ultimate is a real good deal too, and of course use a good filter as Fram ultra, Wix XP or, Purolator pure one. at the 5k intervals, all can be purchased at Wall-Mart.

Yeah, I'm going to go with one of those two. I have oil filter questions, I'll go to the Oil Filter Thread for those though.

Thanks, NYH1.

I forgot to mention, didn't think of it until now. I tow up to 10,000 lbs. a few times a year and not for long periods. My usual trailer is 7,000 lbs. GVWR and isn't usually loaded more than 5,000± lbs.

I plow snow in an area that averages 125 inches of snow a year, which is about 20 pushes per season. It's been down the last few years, but I plan as if it's going to be 125+ inches a season.

If you were also looking into valvoline. Valvoline EP HM 5w-30 is by far my favorite off the shelf oil.

While M1 Vanilla is a very good oil , when WM stocks the M1 EP for $2 more - I opt to spend the extra for what I believe to be the better oil in EP .

Thanks Chris!

it sort of slipped my mind, but you may want to consider Pennzoil Ultra Platnium, its at wall mart for $29.44 per 5qt jug, hey it has a warranty of 20 years or 750,000 miles,,,it does get very good reviews on many sites.

I don't think the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum Oil meets Ford's WWS-M2C961-A1 spec. I didn't see it on their website, I may be wrong though.

I had to run the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum oil in my last truck at first (2015 Ram 2500 4x4 6.4L Hemi). Then Amsoil made their 0W-40 Signature Series oil that met Chrysler's MS-12633 spec. I'm a preferred customer, run their stuff in my small engine apps. So, I tried Amsoil as well.

When I traded my Ram in last week, it had 114.5K miles on it. It still had good oil pressure. For the most part, no matter with the Pennzoil or Amsoil, I had 60psi. at cold start up, 35± psi. at warm idle and 55± psi. at warm driving, pretty much same as when new.

My NONPROFESSIONAL conclusion;

In a 5,000± mile oil and filter change interval, after I had 50k plus miles and up on it. I would go through about a quart of the Pennzoil oil and about 1/3 of a quart of Amsoil.

It had more engine noise with the Amsoil as the mileage went up through the oil change interval (3 to 5,000 miles), especially on cold start up (0°F to 60°F). The Pennzoil was definitely quieter. Both worked. I just figured I'd try Mobil 1 or Valvoline.

Thanks, NYH.

many oils in 5w-30 meet the WSS-M2C961-A1 specs including the Pennzoil Platinum ultra,,the choices can at times be overwhelming when selecting a engine oil for your new ride, in my vehicle I use Havoline Pro-Ds or Royal Purple pcmo 5w-30,, both are nice and quiet, good luck on your selection.

Out of interest, of the 5w-30 grade oils you've considered, have you noticed the widely different hot viscosity and/or HTHS ratings?

You can pick a 5w-30 with 100 C viscosity of 8.5 cSt, or you can pick one ~12.5. Personally, I'd pick based on viscosity and HTHS, not by grade.

What do you mean, "not by grade"?
