I have a 2015 Camaro SS as a "Weekend" fun car. As a result, it often sits Monday - Friday. Some times 2 weeks at a time. I've run a lot of different 30 wt oils in it.... like Mobil 1 ESP 0w30 ESP, Mobil 1 Truck and SUV, Valvoline Restore and Protect, etc...... and with every startup, I'm met with the dreaded GM "Lifter Tick" for a minute or two, before it quiets down and goes away.

A few month's ago, I switched to the Mobil 1 ESP 0w40. guess what? ZERO tick..... Not even once!! It's silent. Every time. This oil is more like a "35wt", than a true 40, so oil pressure isn't really effected much. I think it's just thick enough to keep the lifters from bleeding down when parked for awhile.

YMMV

Isn't that car spec'd for Pennzoil 0W-40?
I know a guy who has the same car and told me that that's the GM recommended oil.

You are gonna be perfectly fine with the Mobil 1 ESP 0W-40. It's a great oil recommended by Porsche, it's DexosR rated (as GM requires), and also is easier to find than Pennzoil 0W-40. I wouldn't run any 30 grade oils in that engine.
The only downside is that it comes only in a quart bottles, not a 5 qts jug.

I would call a "True" 40wt, somewhere in the 14.5 cSt range.
40wt ESP is mid 13's.

I like it for it's HTHS performance over 30wt

Anything over 12.5 is 40 grade. There is no such thing as a 35 grade, and this oil's ability to stick to a 3.8/3.9 mPas even under mechanical shear makes this thicker than most off the shelf 40 grades in the way that matters. KV100 is fairly meaningless unless you want to make up your own definition of the SAE J300 standard.

2015 LS/LT engines were still spec'ed for 5w-30 Dexos 1 (15w-50 for track use). The 0w-40 Dexos 2/R spec didn't start until 2019.

With the Tinted Windows and Palm Trees in the picture, there is no issue with running a 40 Weight Oil. I am guessing that you do not have a Snowblower?

My LS3 is a weekend toy too. Original owner only used Mobil 1 5w-30 and Wix filter its first 26000 miles. Mostly stock. I’ve used FS 0w-40, and now have the ESP 0w-30 in it. To date, even after 5 months sitting, I haven’t heard any abnormal engine noise.

Why would anything GM spec a Pennzoil product? Their partnership is with Mobil.

I don't know. The guy who drove the Camaro told me, they told him so in the dealership. He is a manager at Auto Zone. However, I don't think he knows oils.
I asked him why not run M1 FS 0W-40, ESP 0W-40, or Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W-40, and he said that they said him to run only Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0W-40. Somebody told him that Euro oils are not suitable for American cars. :sneaky:

Maybe that dealership has some sort of private Pennzoil partnership going on? Only thing I can think of. The car's manual would recommend a Mobil product.
