I alwasy told myself I would never buy one. I can read a map/atlas for $4.95. Costco had a great deal, and I bought it. It does come in handy quite often. However, it is just another thing to worry about people stealing. Before I leave my vehicle, I remove all hints of it (windshield bracket, power cord, etc.).

I know someone who leave the mount in place but puts a $2.95 compass in it so it looks like it's just there for the cheap compass.

I have a Garman Nuvi 350. I like it especially for finding suburban addresses and when traveling to a new city and need to find a specific location. I don't use the GPS for an entire trip because maps work good for me initially...so I keep both maps and the GPS to fine tune my location on arrival. I have no problems with maps (even use to teach military map reading in the service) but having no reliable compass or when the sky is overcast sure makes it difficult to gage directions. A GPS is a useful tool, kind of an adjunct enhancement to paper maps, just a lot quicker.

Neither of my parents have GPS devices and they're both typically pretty resistant to new technology until they try it and decide they like it. That said, I decided to buy them a pair of Garmin Nuvi 350's for Christmas. Hope they like them, because I love my StreetPilot.

I am completely lost and disoriented when I go somewhere new until I have a working knowledge of N/S/E/W.

I would stay away from a Garmin unit unless you can guarantee it has the MOST current mapping software in it.

I bought a Nuvi 200W last November, it was shipped with old software, and 3 months later they allowed a lot of people to upgrade to the new software free, but denied me for no reason. I guess its my fault they shipped my unit with old software???

I will never buy another Garmin product for the plain priciple they should offer upgrades for all the units for at least a year from the purchase date...not just hit or miss people. Mine is due for the "upgrade" which costs $60 IIRC...I will be selling it and buying a different brand.

Yeah, I remember that burned a lot of people last year who bought from Wal-Mart. All Wal-Mart's discounted Garmins had the old software that Garmin wouldn't upgrade. I was reading this while I was trying to pick which unit I wanted, and would have probably bought that unit if I hadn't read the warnings on Amazon or CNET.

Garmin Nuvi 660. Solid unit. Bigger screen makes a big difference.

Use it one trip in ten, only when it's needed. Too many drivers play with their gadgets instead of driving. The machine does sometimes pick routes that are less than optimal. But it can help in unknown regions when you're off course.

Buy a non-discontinued model from a high volume dealer such as Amazon, and you'll typically get current maps and a fair price.
