Consumer reports 5 worst car brands.

I simply pointed out the fallacies in the CR reporting.
And I did not know we were arguing; we were discussiog.

Regarding assumptions, you have to challenge them. See where the model leads you. And then make it better.
In my experience, models take years to develop and have to change to be of real value.
My only assumption was, everything is wrong.
Okay, but the fact remains that CR is probably the best data we have access to.
It was you who brought up your career experience in modeling outcomes and I merely responded to what you posted in pointing out that assumptions are everything in any model.

The problem is, CR subscribers are a captured group; that's a highly unscientific survey group.
And they lump so many things into one group, particularly "reliability". Without clear definitions, reliability is rendered meaningless.
Totally meaningless

They’re the same ones to be “oh it’s just an evap code, that’s fine!” but if it were an American brand they’d be all over the internet screaming their 150k vehicle has an evap leak and what junk it is 😑

I remember when they rated the badge engineered VW Routan significantly higher than its Grand Caravan and T&C siblings. CR just quietly swept it under the rug and in later years they were right neck and neck with each other.
Confirmation bias is a hell of a drug. "I buy Toyota because it's rated the top of the CR ranking" and then you are filling out the CR ranking...

I always wondered if, say someone buys a high end vehicle like a MBZ S series, has problems, but refuses to say it is a bad car because they would look stupid for buying it?

I admire people who can be objective; it seems to be a rare trait.

Are lessees eligible to complete these CR surveys?

1. I think people who started The Street web site should be dipped in honey and publicly hanged. That abomination of a web site sometimes pops out on google and I make mistake of clicking on it. I close it as soon as I see what I have opened. Which I did now.
2. As for CR, don’t forget rule about statistics: “it is like a bikini. Shows a lot, but covers most important parts.”
3. Also CR once testing Camry: “with its usual sporty handling.” That is when I realized those people are not serious.

You certainly pegged them well on that Camry comment! One has to wonder , if they came away from driving a Camry with the idea it has USUAL sporty handling, what on earth type of vehicles has that writer driven!? WoW.

I’ve always felt Honda and Toyota drivers to be more willing to blame themselves for their cars’ problems than the product themselves. Similarly, when a domestic brand has problems its “I’m never buying an American car again.” Some of that was undoubtedly earned in the 80’s (hello Pontiac Phoenix). A major problem that I noticed is that Kia and Hyundai vehicles have been perennially on the reliable list, this is despite them blowing engines like crazy.

I quit reading CR back around 1990 or so when their best oil filter article said to use the one that filtered least because it won't clog up on you.
I won't mention the brand because 30+ years later it is irrelevant.
