Hello all. I've been on this board for awhile and I actually think this may be my first post. So much good info I don't need to post!

Anyhoo, I'm looking for Mercon V and can only seem to find Universal fluid. It's like the stuff has just disappeared! I need to get it local; Walmart, O'Reilly, Autozone, etc.

Also has anybody added a drain to their trans pan (Ford Ranger 5spd)? How did this work out for you? I'm thinking of using a 1/2" plug where there is another 1/4" drain inside that. Then I will just crank a nut down on the inside of the pan. I know this limits the amount of fluid that comes out but 4+ quarts hides in the converter anyway.

Thanks.

Use the universal fluid or use Mercon VI. Tons of vehicles call for Dexron II and Dexron III and they won't be able to find it either...that doesn't mean you can't use the latest and greatest Dexron version.

There isn't a Mercon VI...there is a Dexron VI.

Stick to Mercon V or a full synthetic ATF. Don't put Mercon or Merc/Dex in it. It's odd that you are having trouble finding Mercon V...every store that carries ATF here has it. A full synthetic universal fluid (Mobil 1, BG) would be just as good, if not better, but personally I'd do a complete flush if I was going to a different kind of fluid. I have BG full synthetic in my 5R44E and it shifts great, but I had a flush done.

As for the pan, I don't know of anyone who has put a plug in the stock pan on a Ranger or Explorer. There is a company that makes deep aluminum pans for them with drain plugs.

That is a really nice oil pan.

I'm not all that concerned about getting all the fluid out I'd just like to dilute it by adding as much fresh as I can. It has worked well on my Nissan and Toyota's for years. I just put a pan under it it, drain whatever comes out, and refill. Easy and cheap.

O'Reily had Valvoline Mercon V for $4.50/qt. That's a pretty good price I guess. Don't know why they didn't have it last week, or the week before... Everyone else in town has switched to universal fluid and thanks to most of ya'll on the board, I'd prefer to steer clear of that for now.

Thanks.
