When to change it?

Gang,

I last changed my AF at 62,055 and I now have just shy of 98K on my FX4. The Napa Gold was a good choice as it reduced the silicon in my used oil analysis from 19/21 to 11/13 as seen in the series of used oil analysis below.

I have about 35K on the AF now; I do not want to open filter housing to check it--it may introduce more silicon.

What say you? 40K? 45K? Wait for the silicon to rise in the UOA?

Just change the darn thing, even if you introduce a tiny amount of silicon it is not like it will do any damage. Not sleeping because you are wondering if your AF now looks like a black brick could cause damage to your health.

LOL - no worries; I am not losing sleep. I just want to use it to the fullest (they are not outrageously expensive, but still).
 
What's the recommendation in the manual? If you're not there yet I would at least wait till then.

If you're passed, pick a number (50000?) and check it....maybe buy a restriction gauge and put in at that time. Being only a little over a year old I don't imagine there is anything wrong with it yet. Lots of people with the gauges are learning that AFs last much longer than most think.
 
I'd strongly advise adding a Filterminder (google it). Pretty easy to do and it will answer the question absolutely, now and forever.

Otherwise, there is no way to tell because each area is different. If your area is dusty, the filter might need changing sooner. If the air is cleaner, maybe later. The one thing you don't have to worry about is that the filter will get worse as it loads up. In fact, just the opposite happens. Efficiency increases as it loads up. As the filter loads up past a certain point, you will feel a loss of power eventually. MPG won't change until you really feel a big loss of power and you will have gone way past what you should. The factory recommendation is a composite average, slanted towards selling more filters.

Unless your area is very dusty, I'll bet your filter is little more than half done at 35K.
