When do I change the oil in my new car?

The car is a new 2012 Hyundai Accent.
The owner's manual calls for 7500mi oil changes. I guess I'm gonna have the dealer do the oil changes to prevent any hanky-panky if I have a warranty claim. Or can I change the oil myself and not void the warranty? I've always done my own oil changes.

Another issue I'm wondering is how close to 75OO miles I have to come? is it better to do it at 7300 or 7700? I mean if I'm constantly doing it at 7300 then it will throw off the schedule the owners manual recommends. It recommends 7500, 15000, 22500, 30000, 37500, 45000, 52500, etc... etc...

What is the standard way to stick to this schedule? My ONLY concern is to give the dealership a reason to turn down my claim if I ever have engine trouble.

Help!

7500 is 7500. Make sure you don't fall into *ANY* part of the severe service schedule. If so then its 5000 miles or 5 months.(if its the same as what I've read recently)

As far as changing your own, no problem. Just keep accurate records and just to be safe change the oil 500 miles earlier than required. Use the spec'd oil and filter and you will be fine.

Then IF you have any problems you can come back to them and state as FACT that you did BETTER than their requirements.

I always change the oil first time around 1000 miles unless the time limit comes up.

Enjoy the new ride!

Bill

if you keep your recpts for oil and even DIY it is hard for them to void warranty...just do it every 7k to be safe...i have had 6 new cars over years and never had engine trouble despite doing my own OCs...my last new car was a pontiac and i put in M1 0-30 at 3k...read the magnusson-moss act

If you drive more than 15k miles a year then do 7.5k OCI, if you drive less than 15k miles a year then do 6 months OCI. If you DIY keep receipts and a log book of the maintenance, including air filter, PSF, ATF, cabin filter ... for warranty claim.

I would change it the first 1500 miles or so just because of everything wearing in. After that I would change it every 3 to 4k oil is cheap engines are not.

I agree with Bill. I have always changed my new cars oil & filter at 1000 miles, and then continued on the first severe interval which for my was usually 3K & 3 months. Cars with timing belts can go longer than their timing chain counter parts.

I believe in the first oil/filter change @ 1k mi. Do the first one yourself using the proper oil and Hyundai filter. Thereafter, follow your good senses and be sure to at least adhere to the factory recommended intervals. Enjoy the new ride!

The last time I looked Hyundai was the only one that had a filter that exactly matched their specs (On the pre-DI 1.6L). The aftermarket filter was to Honda Specs which will work but is dimensionally off a little. At any rate the OEM Hyundai Filter is a very good filter and can be gotten at a very reasonable price.

Severe Duty on Hyundai Accents (Pre-DI) was 3750 miles. I dont know if its changed. With the fuel dilution issues some DI engines have experienced I would use a quality 5W30 conventional (As long as the owners manual still allows for 5W30 as an alternative like the Pre-DI did) until I got to run a UOA to make sure I wasnt having fuel dilution issues.
