What's your viscosity change threshold?

I'll rock 0w20 Redline but lately its 0w30 M1 and sum LG Biotech. In the summer will introduce small bits of Redline 5w30 to the M1 0w30. Think M1 0w30 is going to be my main/majority wt fill.At 500k,its getting 0w40 M1 or Redline 0w30.

Depends on the vehicle and driving conditions.
My F150 (5.4 2v) I only run 5w-20.
Brother in laws F150 (5.4 3v) I run whatever since his engine is dying (have used 0w-20, 5w-20, a mix of 5w-20 and SAE 30, 5w-30 and current fill of 10w-30, next fill will be back to 0w-20).
My Santa Fe with the 3.3 is currently getting the rest of my 10w-30 stash (another 3 changes), then will get 5w-30.
Sisters Santa Fe is another whatever oil I grab off the shelf.
Mom's Soul will be only 5w-30 since it is a GDI engine and she does only short trips.
Daughter's xB is 0w-20 for now, then 5w-20 once all the 0w-20 is gone, then will start 5w-30. Just because.

My Ridgeline originally called for 5w-20, but since I run it between NC and FL in hotter temperatures, my next OC will be 5w-30 synthetic blend. In my Camry for the same reasons, I may switch from the standard 0w-20 to 5w-20 synthetic.

Never a whole step either way, usually adding some heavier oil if the engine runs like the oil is too thin, or maybe a little top off with a 20 in a 30 engine in the winter - but not too much on the down side! That has never worked for me.

Like right now I have a 1/2 litre of M10W40 in a 0W20 sump in the VW.

The Motul was way, WAY too thin. That really helped.

What is it you are worried about using what the manual says? They design the bearings and all to be used with what they say. If an engine is worn, knocking with low oil pressure, and you need to try and make it last longer you could go thicker to help. At those rpms you are getting a lot of oil flow.
