...not to put it on ebay.

People in our department all got a gift (the iPad) from our CEO (the cupertino fruit stand company in silicon valley), and his signature is either hand signed or laser etched onto the back. Got me all excited because I thought it could worth a fortune being the first one put it on eBay.

Now we got a notice from our VP to keep these "limited" edition from getting these on ebay.

Gee.... got me all excited... for nothing.

Seriously? Your employer gives you a generous gift and your first instinct is to pawn it?

Maybe I just have exceptionally good manners, but mama always taught me that if you don't want a gift, you simply decline the offer, not take it and try to turn a profit.

Remember too, some of us had to pay cash for our iPads.

Not that I don't want it, but I have no use of it when I'm working on its internal day in and day out. With a wife in work injury having the treatment denied by workers' comp, and have to pay out of pocket for treatment, I think I can use some cash at the moment.

I can see that this would probably be a good thing to sell in terms of collector or fanatic value. That said, the request was the request, likely given the characteristic of it... Respect it or don't take it.

At some point it would likely be fine to sell it. Just dont use it, keep the battery at 20% SOC, and in a year or two, selling it would likely be OK, and it would still fetch a good deal of money.

I would not jeopardize the company's trust in me by breaking the rules.

my mother in law did the same thing to my wife. she bought her one of those fancy facial cleaning devices for almost $200 and had her first name etched onto the thing for a xmas present. I said "hey, your name is on it??" my mother in law said "it was to keep us from selling it on ebay". wth? I think it was because the summer of that year, she gave me two used computers when they upgraded their computers. I parted one of them out to upgrade my computer and I sold the other one on ebay for $200. they were going to recycle them at the dump anyway. my mother in law was probably mad that I made money by selling her gift to us and she didn't. talk about drinking that haterade!

Wait 20 years and it'll be worth twice as much as a vintage collector's item. Don't use it, just store it in pristine condition. Think of it as an investment.

And that is some hatin' for sure, Cutehumor. Throwin' salt in the game!

Isn't Steve Jobs kinda sick? If you're in it for the money, fence it when he keels over.

Craigslist maybe???

That's what I am not sure, but if he is asking us not to ebay it, I think it is safe to say I shouldn't sell it either... until I leave the work place or until the CEO pass away.

Not sure how understanding your managers are, but perhaps you could explain the situation to them and ask if you could get your reward as a cash bonus instead.

I'm sure you are joking.

Keep the iPad in a pristine condition and when the fruit stand chief becomes a saint, your iPad will be worth a lot of money.
