I was at a Long's Drugs the other day and they were selling Castrol GTX for $4.89 a quart(!). I then chuckled when I noticed that it was on sale for $4.69. I expect expensive oil, etc. at a non-automotive store, but this seemed to be a new plateau

Wow, that's even more than we pay for GTX up here! If you buy it in single bottles here the regular price is almost $4 per liter. Walmart has 5L jugs of GTX (5w30 and 10w30 only though) for $13.62. I paid $16.99 for a 4.4L jug of 5w20 GTX.

That is about the normal price for GTX at the parts store around here.

Here in Norway, you can find dino oil at gas stations that cost more than 16-17 usd a quart. Havoline is one of the most expencive ones.

You can get GTX in 5 quart jugs at Wal-Mart around here for like $9.xx.

I know that wasn't the original question, but that's about 40% of the "sale" price mentioned by the OP.

In Greece if you go in gas station you might buy a major brand oil for 12$ a quart (litter).
At stores they go arround 4-5 euro a bottle (5-6 U.S $)
