Well, Castrol GTX full synthetic 0w-20 has a number of 9.0. They may be garbage otherwise, but at least PDS wise, that is pretty thick for 0w-20.
Castrol GTX is a syn blend. If you want to compare datasheets claims for cSt to other oils mentioned in this thread, Castrol Edge is a full syn and therefore a relevant comparison.
Tested cSt IRL VOA is another matter since test results with most brands differ from datasheet claims.
I'm personally most familiar with 5w30 & 10w30 oils. I compared all the full syn and blend oils in those grades that are readily available in USA. Especially the HM ones. I looked at datasheet claims and VOAs (all by one lab - Oil Analyzers).
Edge HM 5w30 is thinner than several other good HM choices. However, Edge HM 10w30 looks really good because I like its cSt. So Castrol Edge HM has great cSt if I go up a grade from 5w30 to 10w30.
Edge HM 10w30 cSt has approx same cSt as Quaker State HM FS 5w30. I could be happy using either of those oils in my 97 Buick, but Edge HM costs $5 more.
Valvoline EP HM 5w30 is another good oil with almost as high cSt, but costs $9 more .
Amsoil HM 5w30 is another good oil with similar cSt, but costs $20 more.
Of all those FS oils I just mentioned, Amsoil has the highest cSt at KV100, followed closely by QS HM FS, which is then closely followed by the other two.
That's pretty much it for brands of oil with good cSt @ KV100. At least without going to Euro oils. It's defineately it for brands of HM FS oil.
Those brands of HM FS oils have good cSt and I'd be happy using any of those, but QS HM is by far the most affordable of the excellent HM FS oils that have good cSt.
Then look at QS FS (non HM). Same excellent cSt, but without the extra seal conditioner. Then look at QS UP FS and it has even higher cSt. QS UP FS has highest cSt of any non Euro full syn AFAIK. I'm referring to IRL tested VOA cSt @ KV100.
QS oils not only show high cSt in their data sheets, but also test showing higher cSt than claimed in the data sheets. What other oil does that?
Then consider the $20 (or less) per 5 qt jug price at Walmart for QS FS oils. In the case of QS UP FS also consider it claims to be a 20K mile oil.
Does it live up to it's 20K mile claim? I don't know. Maybe. I do know that in VOAs it exceeds its data sheet viscosity claims, which you can't say about any other brand that I know of. I think it's one of life's rare bargains. Just like Walmart car batteries have been cheaper and superior to most others.
It's a $20 a jug oil that competes with $30 & $40 a jug oils. It's debatable whether you can find a better non Euro oil. I think not. What is not debatable IMO is that QS UP FS is a bargain. You won't find a better bargain, IMO. Same with QS HM FS.
