What's everyone's favorite 0w-20 these days?

Good to know. I will do more research. My GM 1.5T is known to burn more oil with age...and my clock just hit 120k. No oil burning issues yet, but it will probably happen. I hope to drive it until 200k. Thanks bro!
 
Oil burning issues mainly caused by gunked up piston rings. Unfortunately, it is also part of the trend when manufacturers using lower piston rings to reduce the friction that work well with thinner oil like 0W-20 or 0w-8. Restore and protect is tested in the house (Valvoline) who has the facilities and money to do that. It indeed cleans up piston rings and piston rings islands, but only helpful if the cylinder wall is not scored yet.

I would like to use Valvoline restore and protect if my car start consuming engine oil. So far, I did 10k miles OCI in the first 60k miles and switched to 5-7k miles afterward. I have been using various engine oil from TGMO, Castrol Edge Longlife 4, Mannol 7918 API SP, Mannol 7722 approval 508/509, VW genuine 0w-20, Ravenol VSE. So far no oil consumption at 112k miles even with extreemely short daily driving 2 miles in the morning and afternoon in the past 5y. That's why I have been doing 5-7k miles OCI.

I still believe that using whatever engine oil as long as it is within spec API SP or better and do 5-7k miles interval is better than using boutique oil 10k miles interval in 2ZR-FXE engines.
 
I can’t speak to that exact engine, but there are enough reports of oil burning and other issues with meticulous 5k OCI with high quality OTS synthetics that I would probably run HPL or Amsoil if I had younger cars. Now I’m cleaning up the mess from my PO with VRP. Then will run high quality Euro oils.
 
The 5k miles OCI is just a common mid ground. Some people with certain driving condition and engine may need 3k miles OCI or less. I do not believe that using boutique oil will benefit much. PAO is better than typical group III but it is not 2x better, more like < 5% better for daily driving cars.

Some engines are burning oil from 0miles, it is just designed that way, unfortunately, and industry standard is pretty linient with 1L/1200 miles limit of oil consumption.

If our car burns oil, getting low SAPS oil maybe beneficial and extend the catalytic converter life longer that way. If our car does not burn oil, we do not really worry if we use mid or high SAPS oil.

Standardized test that makes an oil get API SP or Dexos 1 gen3, or VW 508/509 approval is a good base line. They are all about the same regardless brands, base oil, or price. I believe in number, science, standardized tests, not speculation and marketing.
