What's everyone's favorite 0w-20 these days?

What was the rationale for not just grabbing a 5w30 or other oil with HTHS>3.5?

I know you're not asking me but I wanted to chime in because it's the internet. I've tried using a light 5W30 in one of my Outbacks that calls for 0w-20 and I just didn't like the performance drop. I might not mind using something like PP 5W30 because it's only like 9.8 kv100 but still I would just as soon use a proven, robust 0w20 to get the results I expect.

Curious, how did you measure this performance drop?

Butt dyno? It was a very noticeable difference in engine performance where the engine was far more sluggish and the idle was not quite right. Same thing happened when I used M1 0w40 in a Hyundai Accent with the GF4D engine that called for usage of 5W20 but allowed for 10w30.

You mean the same 5w-30 that Outbacks get from the factory in every other market in the world other than NA?

Do those other regions use the exact same emissions equipment and specs as the US models? You answered your own question, apples to oranges.

That’s amazing.

Oh and automakers don’t “allow” grades, they recommend them.

Are you implying the NA market gets a unique FB engine for 0w-20 oil and everyone else gets the regular 5w-30 version?

I do not know if the emissions systems are any different in other markets. Why does the catalytic converter configuration determine the engine oil viscosity used?

I’ve been using the NAPA branded Valvoline product for several years now. It generally goes on sale at a competitive price at least once a year. The last time I bought one of the big garage boxes so I should be good for a couple of years.

I’m running Restore and Protect in both my Scions because they both had varnish issues when I acquired them.

Based on your expert opinions should I use 10w-60 in my vehicles in which the manufacturers recommend using 0w20? Viscosity doesn't matter, right? If something goes wrong are you going to pay for it? If a warranty claim gets denied because I listened to the BITOG brain trust are you going to pay for it?

Nice deflection. Shows you don’t understand what you’re taking about.

That's why I'm asking for your expertise, you are addressing me from a position that you know something that I don't and I'm asking you and instead of answering you're just telling me what I've already effectively admitted. I'm simply try share my experiences, forgive my ignorance.

I thought this was the "What's everyone's favorite 0w-20 these days?" thread, not the "you're stupid because you use 0w20" thread

The website is more enjoyable with him on ignore

If the temperature was appropriate, you could indeed use 10w-60. Higher viscosity will not hurt the engine or its components. As long as the crank turns, the oil pump will pump. Higher viscosity does have benefits, to a point. Nobody is running 60 in a FB, but 30 and 40 weights are used plenty, for various reasons. Your owners manuals specifically says “recommends” 0w-20, not “requires”. It even says 5w-30 can be used if 20 is not available but I digress..

I ran 0w-40 in my Outback this past winter, coldest starting temps were down to -20f. Engine cranked slower but started just fine and ran great all winter long.

My initial comment to you was because the FB25 gets 5w-30 everywhere in the world EXCEPT for NA where it gets 0w-20. This is for CAFE regulations and nothing more. A “light” 30 and a 20 weight are close enough that there is no possible way you felt a difference which just a butt dyno.

Did I call you stupid? I didn't see that.

Still just wondering how the emissions equipment is affected by that grade change but maybe we will just have to let that one drop.

You did answer how you measured that "very noticeable engine performance difference" by explaining how sensitive your butt dyno is. Thanks for that.
