okay, the question is this.if you needed some diesel oil and you went to your favorite parts store and all the non syn hdeo was on sale for 9.99.without thinking.what would automatically be your 1st choice.i'm just curious what most people would gravitate to.the choices would be castrol brand, rotella, delo, delvac or no name generic brand.this question isn't about what application it's being used for,or how many miles it will be used for.just a simlpe hey?...thats a good price and i'm gonna stock up type of question.thanks for your replys!!!

Living in the hypothetical world, eh?

Some people would chose based on previous positive experience. Some, personal negative bias. Others, color preference of the bottle. Still others, smell of the oil. Some fall prey to marketing hype. Etc, etc. The reality is that personal preference is swayed by at least one, if not multiple, issues.

If I walked in, and Devlac, Delo, Rotella, Tection Extra, VPB were all the same price, I'd reach for whatever was closest to my cart. Path of least resistance, so to speak.

They are all that good, and there is ZERO statistical difference I can find between them in "normal" OCI durations.

Luckily, reality prevails. There is almost always a price difference between them at any given time in any given store. I've never even seen all the major players at the exact same retail price at the same time. And, of the five I listed, at least ONE will be on sale.

Wallet decides; delima resolved; problem solved.

Delvac was the path of least resistance. The late night truck stop has it at a reasonable price. The bulk dealer has the pails, too. Walmart, which is closer, does have the Rotella at a bit cheaper price, so that may be my next option. I still have about 4 gallons of Delvac to go through, though, and a couple of Delvac 1.

I try not to buy without thinking, especially when it comes to how I'm going to use what I'm about to buy.

Not sure otherwise, Probably Rotella.

It comes in 15W40 dino and 0W40 syn...I think the 15W40 dino is a pretty close relative of the Delvac, which along with XD3 is probably what I would choose these days. But I like Delo too.

In the mid 90s Delo 400 was the best by far them Mobil came on board with GPII [+?] oil and started advertising the million mile oil on the gallon containers and the last of the big 3 Rotella who used their great add package to do the job had to move up on the base oil . In cold I would of course use a syn. If I needed more of an oil Schaeffers would be a choice. Today any of the big 3 that is on sale goes into my wifes Powerstroke and tractor etc. Without feeling shortchanged on the oil choice.

I couldn't begin to tell you how many of the Esso 15w40 pails we've gone through over the years. Do you know if they still offer the 10w30 HDEO at Esso? My dad used to use it in his diesel trucks years ago in the winter.

The old, empty pails came in handy once. We had a PTO shaft snap in a Case tractor and had to drain the gear oil. That thing held over 100 quarts of gear oil. When my dad told me to gather a bunch of 5 gallon pails, he wasn't kidding. I think it was 120 quarts by the time we were done.

Yeah, 10W30 (CJ4) too...it actually comes in a multitude of flavors, I was just commenting on the most commonly used 40 weight multigrade CJ4 options...
I believe Esso makes a 5W30 HDEO as well. They've got something for every application.

hey, thanks for your replies!i know that the oils are all never on sale at the same time, but i just wanted to hear what people would or would'nt choose.i asked this question because i just like to see how people think or how they come to a certain decision or conclusion.i used to use rotella all the time.then after joining this site i began to try other oils and i used delo for awhile and know i'm using delvac.walmart by me has it on price rollback for 9.50.
thanks,for your insights

I virtually follow dNewton's advise. I buy cheap. I get a really good synthetic blend HDEO from a regional oil supplier under their label for around $9 a gallon delivered in by the drum for $5. Follow your wallet and get what your heart desires.

as dnewton3 stated, I don't think you would find a statistical difference between them with respect to how they are treating your engine. So I would buy by price and convenience. For example, went to buy some delo at WM in upstate NY a couple of weeks ago. They only had gallon jugs... which in my country is 3.78 litres. My car takes 4.4L initial fill with some top up depending on length of oci. So I grabbed a 9.5 litre jug of Rotella T since it'll cover 2 OCI's perfectly.

For that test I would look at the oil rating, CI, CI-4 Plus, CF, CF-2 maybe even CJ-4 and choose appropriately.

For my old rig I need a CF-2, but would choose the best newer rating as needed. It's a balance of that and the additives, which far as I know CF-2 oils are very high in SAP and Zinc contents.

Viscosity first, ratings second, price last, IMHO.
