Explorers and Tahoes. There’s one state trooper Durango running around here too every once in a while I’ll see it. My first seeing that one too.

I just saw an article yesterday, Yahoo or MSN, can't remember which, that spoke of the unusually high rate of engine failures in Explorers with the "police" package. Even after Ford has done numerous inspections, they have not reached a conclusion as to what is causing these catastrophic failures. Rod through the block failures which has lead to engine compartment fires. They theorize that it's either rod bearing related, lubrication related, etc.

Fuel dilution from long idle hours, carbon buildup on pistons and heads then whomp onit. = ouch! say the bearings.

Then you have the V6 dumping coolant into the oil - or did they fix that in the last few years?

Recently was to be able to buy moderate mileage newish Exploders - from county and town service - for about 10 -12 grand. There is a FORD dealer used car annex lot up the street loaded with the buggers. They are on hold now for some reason - disappeared off the dealer page.

We currently have all three - the older units were Darth Vader SUV’s - but the new Chief came out white & bright - blue accents and clearly identified Chargers … he seemed to have grabbed a few while he could … Yet to see an SUV in that livery - guess we will …
