Used car recently bought apparently had the engine and area around it hosed down with harsh chemicals. Silver parts of motor show white specks of corrosion. I'd like to spray those areas with something other than oil. Suggestions?

Alunimum oxidation? It usually wont get any worse if you leave it alone.
aluminum oxide, super hard used in the coating of wood flooring finish to make it more durable. A die grinder or muratic acid will take it off if you really want to. ;-)
Use one of these and follow directions to the letter.

Thats what it is....oxidation. Couldnd't think of what to call it when I ask the question.
Muriatic acid (which is Hydrocloric acid) will destroy aluminum. Never use it on an engine, unless you want to destroy it.

Corrosion X will work wonders for aluminum. They sell a product called Max Wax that is nearly ideal for engines. I spray it on a microfiber and wipe on a very thin coating.
