What oil to use for extended change interval (10k)

Hi folks,

I currently run Amsoil ATM 10-30 in 4 vehicles with an OCI of 10k for each. Yes I did the UOA on each. I would like to price some other oil options and am asking for other full synthetic oil brands that could handle extended (10k) change intervals.
Here's the info on my vehicles:

All vehicles are driven in SC.

05 Toyota Tacoma 4.0L v6 4x4 dbl cab / 65,240mi - No probs
Driven easy/slow mostly short trips (5mi one way) seldom over 65mph
Current oil change cost - $52.75

05 Toyota Highlander 3.3L v6 2wd / 109k - No probs
Driven hard/fast - 50/50 cty/hwy 75mph on hwy
Current oil change cost - $49.25

07 Toyota Highlander 2.4L 4cyl / 62k - No probs
Driven easy but apprx 50miles/day 25/75 cty/hwy 75mph on hwy
Current oil change cost - $40.75

08 Toyota Camry 2.4L 4cyl / 30k - No probs
Driven easy - 30/70 cty/hwy
Current oil change cost - $40.75

Mobil 1 EP or Castrol Edge should be up to the task. I'm sure there are others too. Those choices are off the top of my head.

Back40, how long does it take you to go those 10K. Personally I say you're using a great product and it is serving you well, stay with it. But if you must shop around, I would head straight to Wal Mart and pick up some Mobil 1 EP. I know a lot of folks on here say Pennzoil Platinum would do it, but it is not recommended by Shell, so I don't recommend it either.

Anyway, that's a nice stable of Toyota's you have there.

I don't even see the need for M1 EP. We have gotten great results with far over 10k using just standard M1.

If you like Amsoil and want to 'stay with it'; I'd try the 'XL' line for 10k.

I know Amsoil only recommends this oil for 7.5k, but it's a very stout oil, and Toyota's are fairly easy on oil. I think it would do it eaily, and be less expensive.

I wouldn't switch from Amsoil, although I do somewhat question the ATM. Is 10w-30 the proper weight for your vehicles?

Another good oil you can grab locally is the German Castrol 0w-30. It does good in just about anything.

My two well respected friends, I must disagree. I realize as posted above both the oils you mentioned would more than likely do the trick as would the Pennzoil Platinum, but the fact is neither Mobil or Amsoil recommend going 10K with those two oils.

Just say something happened and it was the oils fault, he would not have a leg to stand on with those two oils because he did not do what was recommended. Both Mobil with their EP and Amsoil with their premium synthetics plainly state suitable for extended drains.

M1EP offers a warranty through Exxon/Mobil for 12 months or 15k for the DIY changer, if the car is out of manufacturer warranty. Standard M1 does not offer a specific mileage/time warranty, only that it is protected against oil failure based on manufacturer's OCI recommendation.

Standard M1 would probably be okay for 10k or so, but watch for the manufacturer warranty on the 07 and 08. Of course, an oil related failure it unlikely, but I would want to be covered just in case. Dealers/manufacturer's will look for any reason to deny a claim if it ever comes to that.

Based on that, I would spend the extra $4 or so on the M1EP. Good, stout oil for your application.

Why? Are you trying to save some money, looking for better performance, or just wanting to try something different?

As others have said many times in conventional to synthetic threads, if what you are doing works, why change?

Likely the other oils mentioned would work, and save you a few dollars, but is it worth peace of mind? Amsoil has the experience and track record in extended OCI's. 10K really isn't pushing the envelope at all for Amsoil.

As for ATM vs ASL, I personally prefer the ATM in Toyota engines given the climate is not so frigid.

One ATM equivlent in mobil would be the 10w-30HM oil. Why not stick with the ATM? the cost issue cant be that big on a small fleet. You are looking at 5 to 8 OC/yr all vehicles included?

I would say 10w-30 is the "proper" weight for most vehicles normally operated above 10 below zero F. High vii laden oils are not long drain capable.

Why is the cost of an oil change $12 more for the Tacoma than for the Camry or 07 Highlander? They all take about the same amount of oil.

You won't find a better oil than what you're already using for extended drains. If I was doing extended drains, the small cost difference of using a premium product like Amsoil would be worth the peace of mind it would bring.

I've been doing 10,000 mile OCIs since 1978 with regular M1 in many differant engines with no engine problems at all. No sludge, no engine failures, and some with over 300,000 miles before selling. Since EP came out several years ago I have been using that also with equally good success. However using Amsoil is working great for you so you may want to stick with what works for you.

It might be the "proper" oil, but I was just asking. I'll disagree about the VII not being long drain capable. I easily go 10k on my 5w-40 Euro and about 20k on my 5w-30HDD.

Price shopping. If I stand to save only a few $ per change then I'll stay with Amsoil.

Tacoma - 5.5 qts
07 Highlander and 08 Camery - 4 qts plus I run Toyota OEM filters since they have to be switched out @ 5k.

I'd go for Mobil 1. You can find it in jugs at many stores, including Wal Mart, and it'll yield the best consistent savings.

Since no one cares that you STILL have a vehicle in warranty for 30 THOUSAND more miles or 2 more YEARS I'd suggest that you follow the manual for OCI with it till it has 60k miles or is 5 years old.

That is unless you've already blown the warranty on a new car.

5k or 6 months OCI is what Toyota will require *if* you have a problem down the line.
