Just curious, but what brand of oil filter is everyone using?

I am currently running a Honda OEM Filtech on my Integra, and a Motorcraft on my Explorer, which is changing to a K&N this afternoon when I change the oil. -Joe

Presently I'm using AC Delco Ultragard Gold UPF59 on both my 5.3L Chevy engines. Since they no longer make these filters, when my stock runs out I'm going to Mobil 1 M1-206. I was going to use Amsoil SDF64's until I found out they have a bypass valve in their filter set to a lower bypass psid than the internal bypass in the chevy engine. In addition, the bypass valve in the Amsoil filter is mounted in the bottom of the filter. If the filter goes into bypass the oil has to go past the filter media to get to the bypass valve and thereby possibly flushing some of the previously filtered contaminates in the oil stream back into the engine. The filters that GM recommends for this engine does not have a bypass valve. I think it is a case of Amsoil trying to cover as many applications with a single filter as they can to cut down on inventory stock requirements. I'll still use their oil though.

I use Mann (Volvo OEM), Motorcraft(Ford) and Amsoil filters on my Volvo's and Toyota.

I find them all to be good filters for different reasons.

Sorta on topic: I have a couple used ones in the garage that I am going to cut into soon. Compare to the minimopar study and measure the case thickness on the Amsoil filter, because someone posted a thickness of a motorcycle oil filter - and some folks took this to mean all Amsoil filters had the same case thickness......as I suspected the filter I cut (SDF-42) had a wall thickness of about 0.020" (not 0.010").

Using manly Mann filter in both my cars.

Actually It's the only cartridge filter for my S40 so I pick one up for the 240 while I'm there. Good filters IMHO.

K&N. Probably over priced. But it is the heaviest filter casing out there. Mobil is also about the same thickness. Mobil is probably the best.

I might switch the civic to a STP or SuperTech.

On my car now: Pure One PL-14670
In the carport closet: 4 Wix #51085, & 1 Yellow K-Mart Wix-made Penske. will probably pick up a WM supertech just to compare it. A shame the M1's are so d@#%! high.

PureOne on the 98 F-150 V-6 and 97 Saturn SL-1 and OEM on the John Deere and WIX on the Massey F.

However, I'm very interested in Fleetgard ( Cummings ) filters. The Cummins dealer has or can get all the filters in need and at competitive prices compared to PureOne, WIX and John Deere.

I believe Fleetgard makes many of John Deere's filters. Neither will confirm or deny.

Does any one have any experience with Fleetgard?

PureOne 14670 on a Dodge 318 Magnum.
PureOne 30001 on a Jeep 4.0L HO. (going to 40017 next)
Wix & PureOnes on others.
My mother got a (cough) Fram on her Camry before I knew what happened. Somehow I don't think she'll do that again.

I use SuperTech filters on both my Olds van and my Chrysler 300M. They are virtually identical to the more expensive Bosch filters that Champion also makes (cut a Bosch and SuperTech open and see).

Nissan Maxima, Mobil 1, soon to use Bosch
Nissan Altima, Bosch, & sticking with it.
Ford Escape, Pureone, soon to use Motorcraft
Ford E150, Pureone, soon to use Motorcraft

Switching to Motorcraft on the Ford vehicles because it is a decent filter for the $$$, and the Escape owners manual actually warns against start-up engine noise or knock if a non-Ford spec filter is used. Never seen that sort of warning in ANY other owners manual I've EVER had, and have heard those noises on the van with, surprise, surprise...a Fram. Nuf said.

The Mobil filter is the best IMHO, but not sure its worth the $$$ anymore.

The Bosch strikes me as a fair cost/value proposition.

'93 Toy 4x4 V6-->OEM (Nippondenso-Japanese made or Purolator-US made I think)
Might consider switching to another brand for extended drains (if all goes well when switching to synthetic next month

)...K&N or Mobil1 or ??

Read some discouraging info about Filtech (Honda OEM) filters on another web site...individual dissected several filters and questioned the filtering medium. According to the site there are three OEM Honda filters available (one for Japanese domestic market, one for US, and one for Canada). The JDM filter was of the highest quality, but is not available here. I have been using AMSOIL filters for years on my own cars and those of many others with great results...we currently have an 02 Honda Odyssey and a 98 Maxima. AMSOIL filters contain top quality components, a thick casing, and a synthetic filtering medium that contains glass fibers for strength over extended use. -

For what it's worth, Bosch and SuperTech are not identical. Their cases may be, but the filters are different: SuperTech filters (and their STP brand mate) at rated at 20+ microns, the Bosch goes down to 15 microns. The Mobile One (also Champion) down to 10 mics. This info. came from a call to Champion. The real question is the relative importance of their different filtration abilities...
