Mid-engine Ferrari's in crashes seem to separate at the firewall - the engine goes one way and the passenger compartment another. This car separated just behind the firewall.
The sad thing is that some Ferrari's separate just ahead of the firewall, and the driver and passenger get dumped on the road at 100MPH. The pictures have been on the web. What a tragic mess, nobody deserves to die that way.
As for the Darwin award thing, look at it this way: Smokers die every day from smoking-related illnesses - heart disease, lung cancer and a host of others. Second-hand smoke kills another host of victims. Just because this guy had a million dollar car and it (nearly) happened over a few seconds instead of a couple of decades doesn't mean it's right to slag him for being reckless with his life and the lives of others.
