What is the oil filter on my Toyota Highlander?

I remember them well and they were right under the hood. Very convenient compared to the Toyota location.

True, at least of the ones I met. They didn't require a special tool, either.

If it's like the BMW & GM cartridge housings, it is good to put a mark (Sharpie line) on the cap running to the housing when the cap is fully closed, for future reference. Then next time turn the cap so that the line matches cap to housing. ..... As long as the o-ring is in there, it won't leak regardless of how much its torqued down. You could just look for a gap between housing and cap and make sure its closed.

2012 Highlander in my garage. Closing in on 120,000 miles with Mobil1 0w-20 extended performance at 10,000 mile intervals. I use Baldwin cartridge filters that I order online. I simply put a 3/8" drive ratchet into the the end of the cartridge housing and take it off. A little oil drains out but I do it over a drain pan. I replace the oil rings using those supplied with the cartridge. Re-installing the housing really doesn't require a torque wrench. Run it up until it bottoms out and you're done.

I know there's a company that makes a spin on filter adapter for Tundra V8's, they might make one for the smaller engines too but not sure, may be worth looking into!
