What is that in the replies column?

I've noticed for a long while that when viewing a forum all the threads are listed and in the column with the number of replies some threads have in red and parenthesis usually a smaller number than replies but not always. Not all threads have it and the number seems to vary randomnly. I wasn't sure what it signifies.

Red number is a number of new messages in the thread since your last visit to BITOG.

 

[Jakegday]

the black number is total replies. the red number, varies from person to person, since it signifies the amount of "new" replies since you last visited the site.

Thanks it seems so obvious now that you mentioned it but I just didn't think of that.
