We sure have a good group of guys on this site.

Yes, many of the forums are pretty dead now that the fb groups killed them off. I see individual forums coming back eventually, though, since fb doesn't do anything about the scammers.
It depends on how that individual group is moderated. I belong to a lot of different FB groups that don’t seem to be moderated at all and are riddled with scammers. But I personally am admin or moderator of 6 different groups and I don’t tolerate any scammers and most often I catch them when they request to join but if they sneak through that process and post their scam I usually delete it within the hour

I was on ND for awhile for natural neighbor chat. Used to be decently moderated - no national politics. Nice. With the new DC folks suddenly no moderating. A real poop fest. Crazies just railing against all the winning

I belonged to a few groups where I realized the mods were the scammers! Lol

Pretty much.
When I’m approving new members of my groups that’s one thing I look at, I see what other groups they belong to. If I see a long list of various “part out” groups on their list I don’t let them join and I just block them from the group (otherwise they could sneak into the chat version of the group)

Most UK based car forums are now dead, a lot of them shut down. The car-forum era is officially over and it makes me quite sad.

I miss the days you'd have a handful of guys on a car specific forum who knew the car like the back of their hand, I fulfilled that roll on a few forums that are now long gone. You could jump on a car specific forum, ask a question and you were sure to find someone who had the same issue, or at least knew exactly what the problem is. The modern day Facebook groups that took over just aren't the same, especially from a searchability perspective and general group-knowledge.

I was lucky I caught the end of it. There was meets, plans, ideas, events, jokes, engineering and friendships that that came as a result of forums and it's all just kind of died.

BITOG is the last place left for me where I feel like something is going on, but even here has slowly gotten quieter over the last 10 years.
There was an excellent site for that rare breed, we Mazda MPV enthusiasts. The Gen 1 (1989 - '98) section was particularly active.

The tone was similar to BITOG, with civil and helpful members, and tight moderation.

As those vans aged out and were retired, members left and forum traffic dwindled.

Then the site was hacked a couple of times, and never really recovered.

RIP, MPVClub.com

Also some older members of any forum have passed away.

I mod another forum (VW Atlas) as well as a ~7K person FB group (VW Golf Sportwagen/Alltrack). The Atlas forum's only issue was spam/scam stuff but the admin/manager/owner/whatever seemed to sort that out on their side. Not much else to do and I only check on it once every few weeks as it's not a high-traffic site - it was getting old deleting dozens of those every morning and I about said the heck with it before they fixed the software. The FB group is fun and really only requires moderation for spam/scam stuff which has increased a lot in the past year. I've had to start removing scam posts/ban members regularly and we already had a member get taken so it's a real issue unfortunately, I moderate that group daily. Beyond that, moderation on the FB broup is simple, I've only had to remove 3-4 people in the last 5 years of doing it for egregious personal threats etc., no real rules beyond the obvious stuff and it works just fine....I note that here, often the "older more mature crowd" is credited with the success/enjolyment of BITOG but honestly, those folks here seem to struggle the most with being able to keep things on-topic and not let P comments slip in at any opportunity...we rarely if ever see that in the FB group with a much younger (mainly Millenial last I did an age poll) demographic.
