The sort of folks who are inclined to not be well behaved would get bored to death here in short order, so that's why we don't see them.

Behaved? Here? I would limit it to composed, muzzled,tactful or restricted. Just like a dog that doesn't bite; you give it a taste of blood and its a different animal.

Maybe it's just a population ratio. In reality, how many people do you need to keep a forum alive? In the UK there's a lot less of us. And those who enjoy cars, enjoy maintaining them, modifying them and driving them are demonized by the folly that is climate change.

Demonized about four different seasons? Roughly one every 90 days since the beginning of time unless you are in Canada or Russia then its only Fall and Winter year round

Most UK based car forums are now dead, a lot of them shut down. The car-forum era is officially over and it makes me quite sad.

I think that's true of a lot of forums, regardless of subject matter. I used to be on a lot more of them - sports forums, music, photography, model trains, half-a-dozen car forums.... Most are gone now. Some are ghost towns. Where the 1990s had its email lists and Yahoo groups and 2000-2010 had its forums, the 2010+ era has its Facebook, Instagram and whatever else is hot this week. Its unfortunate, really, because none of the new platforms have even a fraction of the Search and archive capabilities the forums do. I suppose the moral is: If you like your forum, post on it often. Keep it alive!

I mod another forum (VW Atlas) as well as a ~7K person FB group (VW Golf Sportwagen/Alltrack). The Atlas forum's only issue was spam/scam stuff but the admin/manager/owner/whatever seemed to sort that out on their side. Not much else to do and I only check on it once every few weeks as it's not a high-traffic site - it was getting old deleting dozens of those every morning and I about said the heck with it before they fixed the software. The FB group is fun and really only requires moderation for spam/scam stuff which has increased a lot in the past year. I've had to start removing scam posts/ban members regularly and we already had a member get taken so it's a real issue unfortunately, I moderate that group daily. Beyond that, moderation on the FB broup is simple, I've only had to remove 3-4 people in the last 5 years of doing it for egregious personal threats etc., no real rules beyond the obvious stuff and it works just fine....I note that here, often the "older more mature crowd" is credited with the success/enjolyment of BITOG but honestly, those folks here seem to struggle the most with being able to keep things on-topic and not let P comments slip in at any opportunity...we rarely if ever see that in the FB group with a much younger (mainly Millenial last I did an age poll) demographic.

I have heard it said that forums are only for old people and are dying. However, for Jeep JL's alone, there is at least 5 separate forums focused on them, though I only spend time on a general Jeep forum and one JL forum. Behavior on one is much better than the other. Some 4x4 forums are beyond juvenile.

The minivan forum I am regularly on has been around for a long time, and I recall being one of the first members. Most of them are gone, though the site still lives on. Even when I didn't have a minivan of that brand, I still visited due to the great people. My favorite Cuda forum has died, which started when the server would no longer support pictures. That made it a very boring site.

This site is great because it is so diverse. If I don't want to talk about cars, I can visit the General forum, or the bike forum, or even the small engine forum on this site. That, along with the great people, helps keep it alive and vibrant. It was a post on this forum that helped me save $1000's when my deep freeze temp controller when out. A suggested Amazon purchase for ~$50 posted on here saved the day.

So I'm old, immature and thick (thin never was).....yup about sums that up.

I think many of us come from the old school forums, and we still like it here.

Much less drama than social media……

A fb groups isn't really a forum though. It's not like on here where someone slams down a 3 paragraph essay.

I'm so glad volvoforums.org.uk is around. I have my theories on its success and that of sweedspeed and matthew's too.

With which cars were you involved? Any I would've seen watching The Saint and The Avengers?

There was meets, plans, ideas, events, jokes, engineering and friendships.....even here has slowly gotten quieter over the last 10 years.
Too bad the Upcoming Events pages went down with the ship.

What stinks is that short, sensational, copy cat items and gossip is the traffic where longer, more thoughtful, worthwhile communications require time and maintenance efforts.
Glut of crap...no smarts....no benefit...no good

While it is difficult to determine the age of members, you can glean some salient details from their posts.

So, my experience with people who can’t stop talking about politics, spans all age ranges, and just last night I had to ban a relatively new member who could not stop his political ranting, and that member was quite young. I had to ban an older, very long-term member, who could not give up the P a few months ago. But most recently, it’s been the younger folks.

So, at least on this site, the “relatively younger“ demographic seems to want to bring up the P more than others.

I am constantly banning them from the page I admin.
