What is "German Castrol."

That is to say if I want to buy it TODAY, which version of castrol is "German Castrol."

I understand it to be a thick 30 weight sold as 0w-30?

Is that correct? And which bottle is it in?

Would it be good for a 97 jeep 4.0?

The only grade of castrol currently made in Germany is Castrol EDGE 0w40.

The 0w30 is made in Belgium.

Both are fine oils if your application calls for such a lubricant.

Always thought "GC" was 0W-30.. Apparently, that's no longer accurate (the German part.. It also no longer ppurs green.) Still is API SL, pretty sure.

"GC" 0w30 is indeed a thick 30, definitely on the thicker side for a 30.

I always thought "GC" 0W-40 was thicker for a 40, as well.

The whole 30 vs 40 thing is a preference. I come from a family that also was a fan of 10W-40 in any motor. The change to 5w30 was a reluctant one.

Maybe, but prolly not... 0w30 MAY be all synthetic and MAY be dual rated as SAE30 and 0w30 - it is not unheard of. But it would be one of the pricier oils.

All the cheaper ones will be syn-blend or dino and will shear down to about a 20 or so.

SAE 30's are shear proof as they have no VII's in oil. Just oil and add-pak

Always has been. The 0w30 started off as GC.. Known as a thicker 30.

Now we have Castrol 0W-40 (used be 5W-40 was the "Belgian Castrol" not 0W) and I would think it too is a thicker 40

But as to your original question.. OW-30.

Use in your Jeep with confidence.

It is Castrol Syntec 0w30.
Black bottle. Check the back for a Made in Belgium note. Old stock would say Made in Germany.
It is rated SL, meets BMW LL01, and has 1000ppm worth of zddp.
It has viscosity at the upper end of the 30 range, only 2-3% away from being a 40.
Should be good for your Jeep 4.0

No. 0w30 is a multigrade oil, SAE30 is monograde.

I actually ran GC 0w30 in my Jeep 4.0 for an OCI. Worked very well, did not UOA it and did not use it again as at the time I had no patience and couldn't stand waiting out a synthetic OCI ha ha.

The GC is now the 0w40 but I'd not consider the 0w30 greatly inferior. I believe the 0w40 is a "thin" 40 not a thick one though. Should be a great match for the Jeep 4.0.

I would use Mobil 1 0W-40 instead of German Castrol 0W-30/0W-40 based on the used oil analysis I've seen.

You can try both (Mobil 1 and GC) with used oil analysis yourself.

And why is that? Based on my own UOA, I would use Castro 0W30/40 before Mobil 1 )W40.
As for new Mobil 1, we still do not have enough (if any) UOA to have idea how good it is.

Call the oil by the specification, as Castrol does, and there's no confusion. It's called Castrol 0w30 A3/B4, right on the label.
