What Edge Does Castrol Edge Have Over Castrol Magnetic?

I have used 6 brands of oil so far on the same car and never have I seen the oil turn reddish on the drain time as I saw when I drained Amsoil signature and castrol edge.

The reddish color on drain is a detergent turn red when oxidized and it seems these two use a lot of detergent.

Given the cost factor, AMSOIL Signature Series is out of the window and I am left with Pennzoil ultra platinum and castrol edge black bottle.

The castrol edge is twice as expensive as Castrol Magnetic where I live.. both of which are full synthetic API SP Certified.

I want to know what justification there is to go for the castrol edge in terms of Wear protection and sludge prevention.

My car is a Morris Garages Gt with a by design-over-stressed 1.5 GDI turbocharged engine.

I didn't realize that the SAIC/MG made a car called GT.

Castrol positions Castrol EDGE as a higher tier product over the Magnetic and GTX Full Synthetic. You either trust Castrol that the product is better, or not. If Magnatec meets the specifications required by the manufacturer of your car, then save money and use it instead of Castrol EDGE.

The MG GT doesn't exist in all markets.

Logic supports using the lowest cost product if they satisfied the OEM specs. But i am not convinced with just a normal API SP oil and can't waste a chance for improving wear protection. Oil is cheap but engines are not

Looking at magnatec on the uk website there's tons of varieties including euro magnatec. I just counted and it's a whopping 20 different magnatec versions not including the diesel branch of magnatec.

The only real benefit is that it can help worn out parts usually in the timing system. It could also "cling" to the bores so there's a bit more oil on there. I imagine it just has surfectants which don't aerate since surfectants are supposed to lower the surface tension but they can also aerate in the pump but castrol figured something out so aeration isn't an issue.

Its entirely possible the mangatec currently sold in other markets is nothing like the old product we used to have in the USA.

I used to run magnatec. Here it was a decent budget oil. It certainly was not a premium product.

Of course I have run Castrol EDGE in my truck and it never came out red - so I have no idea what's going on there.

Magnetic Could probably be better than mainstream walmart branded API SP. But they cost 50% less than Castrol EDGE and is considered inferior to Castrol EDGE. Reason unclear.

50% less when compared to the equivalent spec? Like 5w-30 A5 or C3 variant and 5w-40 in C3 or a3/b4 which castrol sells in edge and magnatec? If so i'd be even more confused than you.

I wish we could get castrol vecton long drain 10w-40 E7 in the states. That 1.85% saps and 12 tbn looks real good.

GTX 15w-40 a3/b4 looks interesting. Never seen a euro a3/b4 in 15w-40.

It might be helpful if you present some prices - even in your local currency - for comparison and analysis.

Here at Walmart supertech is as low as 18 bucks for 5 quarts, and the most expensive stuff being Valvoline Restore and Protect which is about $30. So while thats a 60% increase for Valvoline Restore and Protect, its only $12 which isn't much money anymore, so some don't worry about it and buy what they like. Edge as a reference is $28.

Had to look up that car, and glad I did. It looks like a nifty ride! Reminds me of a Honda Civic. Maybe more upscale?

Regarding oil, if you are running 8000 km changes, I'd go for the cheaper oil. The Edge would likely have a better base oil, which would be good for extended runs.

BTW, I ran the Magnetic in my Civic 1.5T until they discontinued it in the USA. No complaints. As other have said, it came in at a lower price point than some other oils in my market, but that doesn't mean it's bad oil.
