SM version, not SN.

I don't know which is better, and better is so application specific anyways, but in my XJ6 I find M1 to be no more or less noisy than the conventionals and HDEO I used before it.

What recent complaints? There are no issues with m1 and noise. It's all in your head.

M1 SN 0w20/30 made my Honda 2.4L very quiet.

Different cars like different lubes and M1's AFE like you are using and the EP series have not generated as many noise complaints regular M1 has.

Here are 7 recent threads regarding M1 and noise complaints. Most since the SN came out. And that is just the part of the first page's search results.

Noisy Engine with Mobil 1 EP
Mobil 1 = More engine noise
Mobil 1 and Engine Noise
Mobil 1 and Excessive Engine Noise
Noisy Escape Engine using 5w30 Mobil 1
Noisy Engine with Mobil 1 0w40
...noisy valve tappets Mobil 1

I fail to see why some on here act like you kicked their dog if you dare so much as mention anything negative about Mobil 1. I would buy it, I would use it if the price and application were right but I don't drink the Mobil 1 Koolaid!

Buster just because M1 is quiet in your ride doesn't mean it is in everyone else's. Nor does it mean because some have noise that all will.

ASM gave me noise which prompted the switch to Edge SM 0W20. It was good, but their messing with the formula with the change to SN swung me to Mobil 1 AFE. I'm currently running AFE SN 0W20 with no noise at all. Opinions vary.

I agree. M1 has always been great in my engines in every way. I have several friends and family who have never experienced this evasive noise issue either. Some engines produce some upper end noise by their design which doesn't reduce the life of the engine at all. It simply is a non issue.

Yes, there are engines that produce upper end noise with some oils, while being relatively quiet with other oils. In most of those cases, it is a non-issue only if you don't mind the extra noise.

I don't believe I ever claimed that increased valvetrain noise equals increased wear, but I'd prefer to hear my exhaust, not my valvetrain.

Relatively quite is the design aspect of some engines, especially some of the OHC engines. Oils aren't going to fix that.

Titanium seems to fare better with steel/iron wear from what I've read. The thing is, no one has admitted to knowing exactly how titanium works as an AW (and indeed this is the case for quite a bit of tribological staples) The most I've seen speculated in a particular paper is the local formation of a molecular layer of iron titanate. This was a while back when I
was researching lubes/additives ideal for the rotary actually led me to that paper. I remember they couldn't directly observe this happening due to physical constraints, but they calculated it out and reached the theory mentioned above. I'll try and find that paper again. Titanium may have other reactions with other metals, I don't know, but it seems established as an effective ferrous metal AW.

I've been using M-1 0w20 for several years now, and have been very satisfied with the results. My Focus runs very quite and smooth. I run my M-1 for a 8000 +/- OCI.

I have never used Castrol Edge, so I have no opinion.
As others have said, flip a coin. IMO, both are quality products, and your vehicle really won't know the difference.

Also agree that you should compare M-1 EP to Castro EDGE w/ Titanium.....and use a 5w30.

HA. I love it.

Here's an example of PU making excessive noise. It seems every oil has it's na sayers. Only M1 is used far more than the rest.

So how did pennzoil ultra get dragged into this. I thought this was a castrol vs Mobil.
And Mobil doesn't have quite the market share you might think. In Canada Mobil is used minimally due to cost and in Europe they aren't the big dog either. Just the states is Mobil a major player.

They are a pretty big dog in Europe Clevy, they are the OE lubricant provider for Mercedes, Audi and a few others.

And in Canada they are still the biggest name in synthetic oil in terms of sales. Their conventional oil sales aren't anything to write home about but then that's not what we are discussing right?

You do realize that Mobil 1 represents over 50% of the syn lube market, right? That makes all of the above posts not that significant at all.
