A good friend of mine is helping his girlfriend sell her 1999 Honda Accord. It has 165,000 miles on it and has a manual transmission and 4 cyl engine. I detailed the inside for them and it is in pretty decent condition for a 15 year old car that sat outside for most of it's life and never has been smoked in. The paint is shot but it runs well and has no problems. I'm not sure what the used market is like these days and wondering if the blue book values are accurate. Cash for clunkers still having an effect on older used cars? We are thinking maybe $3,000 for it based on the interior is clean and the car is reliable and it is a Honda with a manual transmission and their solid 4 cyl engine. What do you think?

I'm with mike... try it for a little higher for a week then drop if no one shows up.

It's only worth what anyone is willing to pay for it in that condition. The Detail work my have only helped a little as the overall condition of the exterior tells potential buyers that regular maintenance may have been lacking too. Is there any maintenance records?

$3000 is a good advertising price. Don't put OBO - "or best offer" - that just tells people up front you'll take less and encourages low ball offers. Curb appeal matters and the paint on this car kills that, doubtful that a 5 speed helps either. IMO first legitimate offer $2000 or over should get it. Accept cash only, meet in public places and preferably not alone. If you have a bad feeling about an email response, ignore the email. I use Craigs List to advertise because it's free. I've been buying and selling new and used cars since 1974.

Maybe yes and no.

I take great care of my Focus. However, when it turns 10, it's going to be missing rocker panels, have rust holes in all of the fenders, etc.

The interior will be clean and it will have been taken care of.

Fords just rust worse than anything, even if you take care of the car.

It's pretty common for cars of that era to lose clear coat.

I would start high with it atleast, $4k sounds OK. My Dad had basically the same car and it sold for asking to the first person who looked at it. People want these cars.

With the shot paint, nobody is going to pay that kind of money. Only if your friend had kept it waxed :-(

Maybe a guide for you:
Almost a yr ago, I paid 4K for mine. very similar car, an EX 2000 5spd with 136K at the time, paint in better cond than this one, VERY clean/original under the hood. Needed a set of tires very soon after i bought it, an all round clean and genuine car.

Id say what yo have is worth 3K, easily but I havent seen it and know nothing of how good it is mechanically.

Bring the car to WNY and you'll get 3500 all day long.

Yeah, I am thinking ask $2500-$3000 but take anything close to $2000. Lots of miles and the pant is shot. Not worth much IMO. Interior is not all that great either from what I see.

No offense, but don't be dumb about this....

The NA economy is still weak, prices are going up all the time, fuel is expensive...all this to say that people are desperate for this kind of car - cheap, reliable, and good on gas. Honda's sell on name alone.

Price it at $5k, and don't take less than $3500...it will sell in no time. If I had the money, I'd bet on it.

$2,000 would be a steal for that car. A $500 Maaco paint job on the horizontal surfaces will have that thing looking clean in no time. One could probably pay $2,000, spray it, and easily make $1,000 on a flip.

For $2,000, I'd buy it and drive it for another 5-10 years.

its a four cylinder honda that can run for another 100-200k miles, i wouldn't part with it for less than 3k. Ugly paint or not.

Seems like a $3k-$4k car up here. To be it has a bonus, manual transmission which means it is not driving around with a timebomb automatic that will instantly junk your ride.

Here is the thing.

By OP's own description, this car was certainly not taken care of by the owner. Were oil changes done on time? Does the car have maintenance records? Both interior and exterior were shot. OP fixed the interior. How many other things in this car are broken or not working?

If one is buying a used car from a private seller then how the previous owner has treated the vehicle becomes primary criterion for purchase decision.
