What happened to the simple pleasures of yo yo's? The excitement of watching the Duncan Champions doing all their tricks?

Cool post, you just took me back to the many memories of them. Sadly they have been replaced by cell phones and tablets. No need to stand up or do any type of physical exercise /coordination anymore. 🫤

Replaced by super mario brothers and legend of Zelda.

I actually got my kids yo-yo's when they were kids, and they liked them. Maybe I should get them for them again as stocking stuffers. There early 20's. Thanks for the idea!

Anyone have suggestions for best yo-you for 2024? I would lean towards easy to use over trickster?

Super Mario Party with my 3 kids is always a blast, waiting on the new one to come in shortly.

My dad used to brush his teeth with cedar branches and walk to school uphill both ways so I think yo-yo's went to the same depreciated activity. j/k

I'm a diehard Duncan fan and still have a couple. My absolute favorite is the Imperial, great starter yo-yo. Still plenty of tricks to do with it, but not quite as balanced laterally as a Butterfly of Windrunner. Those are better for some more fun work or tricks. Really want something special? Get a metal Haymaker. Awesome thrower. Along those lines for advanced work are the Freehand and Big Fun.

Internet, cell phones, and video games have decimated the interactive toys or games you had to use you imagination with. I played outside a lot as a kid 😁.

Now we have ever expanding waste sizes and resulting diabetic health crisis in young people.
Loss of independent thinking and ingenuity to one scripted electronic game.
I have nothing against them but for many kids it’s the only interest they have.

They are coming back. My 7 year old is obsessed with them on-and-off; has been for over a year now. He's quite good too! He has a few different ones with different characteristics, and can do some pretty complex tricks. I actually bought myself a decent yo-yo to play it with him.

My dad going to school in the sixth grade according to his stories.

Cool!

Reminds me of the owning Clackers (Kerbangers) too. The plastic balls at the ends of string that used to pummel your arms and get wrapped around Telephone wires.

Over the long term, the general public's interest in yo-yos rises and falls.

Have not seen a paddle ball since the 1953 3-D movie, House of wax (which co-starred Charles Bronson as "Igor")

They got replaced by video games. I wish I still had my Duncan yo yo collection. I don't know where they all went. Got a feeling they fell victim to the secret garage sale.

When I was in 6th grade, about 60 years ago, we discovered tops. They were fun too. Back then it was legal to play kill the man with the ball.

Yes and some tops had whistles!
I wonder if they still play dodgeball in school gyms. I guess that might be same as "kill the man" ?
We would throw/slam a good size sort of heavy ball at our opponents and try to hit them. *LOL* I strongly suspect they dont do that in school gyms anymore. Actually if you google the subject it has become quite controversial as you would expect in today's world.

Yeah, just like BB gun wars. Only 1 pump on a Crossman 760 😁.
