What happened to Havoline's popularity?

Orielly Auto Parts is the only place I can find it and it's usually not on the shelf instead in the back. I like it and would use it.

I saw it priced about $0.75 cheaper than most oils at Autozone.
I buy it. Still a fine oil in my opinion.

When I first joined this board, I was a Havoline user and it just happened that it was the "talk of the town" on this board. Pre-Katrina, I purchased many cases of Havoline (old formula) for 99 cents per quart. Just after Katrina, I purchased about eight cases at 99 cents. Finally used up my final stock not too long ago. Havoline decided to change its formula and market itself as a premium motor oil. I also started using Pennz Platinum in my family vehicle (2005 Grand Caravan) do to an oil consumption issue. I did not have as much of a consumption issue with a synthetic. Since then I have been a synthetic user. Was using PP, but switched to Mobil 1 simply because I could not get PP in 0w/30. Now, I work at a Ford dealership. I use the lift there and do my own oil changes. Will start using Motorcraft full synthetic because that is what is available. I can buy the Motorcraft at cost plus 10%, which is a little more than Pennz Plat or Mobil 1 in a five quart container at Wally World, but no worries about stock piling, sales or disposal.

IMO....Chevron/Texaco took all of the Moly out of Havoline, per VOA's Posted on the board.

Chevron Havoline, SN, GF-5, no longer has any Moly in Pack and no Titanium as a substitute.

IMO....there are better oils on the market like PYB, Formula Shell and Quaker State Green Bottle, to name a few, that have kept the old school Moly and have terrific add packs. In addition, SOPUS UOA's are stellar and they are proud of their reputation.

I guess Havoline has gone to the secret "organic" add pack or maybe a less potent add pack. It seems that some oils, will no longer live up to their past reputations for having a very strong add pack. Unfortunately, it looks like Havoline has joined that group.

What happened to cause the revival of this thread after nearly three years?
Havoline was and remains a solid oil.
If I ran across some on clearance, as I did at Walmart a few years ago, I'd probably add it to my stash.

I know the cost of living here in New England is higher than in most parts of the country, but we NEVER have the good sales and clearances the rest of you lucky dogs are always going on about.

PP is $24.95/jug at Wally's and they haven't had a sale or a rollback on ANY oil in years.

The MIR deal I just got from AAP was almost not worth it due to the ignorance and rudeness of the clerk in trying to get all the copies of the receipts needed for both Pennzoil and Purolator.

I remember when Quaker State "Q" was blown out at Wally World for $4.99 for a 5 QUART JUG and Valvoline Full Synthetic was likewise blown out at $4 a quart. In 2010.

Unrelated to Havoline, but.. what is up with Quaker State's "premium synthetic" a la "Q" oils? Did they go bye-bye? Are they Pennzoil without additives?

I think I read here that the 0W-20 is exactly the same oil in a different bottle. The other weights? I don't have a clue, but they are probably a good deal.

Mayeb they determined it didn't need it anymore? They been messing with the base oils a lot lately--ever since SM was being developed.

There is no doubt that Havoline is still a great oil. That's not the question. The question is how great a value is it for the price. Havoline raised their price to premium levels. It is a "good" oil that ceased to be a great "bargin". That's why it became less popular.

IIRC, last I read, Chevron still wants to keep some of the legacy brands from Texaco. They have done some simplifying on the HDEO side, but I think they said they were going to keep Havoline PCMO going.... It was in Lubes and Greases a few issues back.

Rotella is now the HDEO Brand.

I expect Havoline to eventually become the PCMO Brand.

I had been a Havoline user since Dad closed his ESSO/Exxon station back in '79. We had always used Uni-Flo oils & Purolator filters in the family. This is what Dad had stocked at the station.

After Dad's retirement and the "Stash" was all used up, Havoline Formula3 was always on sale...Cheap! As were FRAM filters(even though Dad always stocked Puro's). Once we used up all of the Uni-Flo/Puro's, this combo of Havoline/Fram was all I used 'til about the early 2000's, along with other deals that I could find.

Then I discovered BITOG!
Havoline was the sleeper oil along with others(Chevron, MotorCraft, German Castrol etc.) And all of the deals that members were posting in the "Procuct Rebate, Sales and Promitions" section. Listing all of the auto parts stores that were selling oil and other products really cheap. Even Pharmacys and Hardware stores were selling oils cheap; I was there!

Then one day Havoline shot up in price and change the name to Deposit Shield.

For SOPUS, not Chevron...

Am I misunderstanding what you are saying or vice versa?
Havoline is not a Shell (Pennzoil) product, Havoline is tied in with Chevron.
I know it is quite a challenge to keep up with who's who or what's what anymore with products, sports teams, brand name products, stores, etc.
It makes one think about that old Abot/Costello routine: Who's on first.

Good Day,
Steven

Gene K is the one that said Rotella was the HDEO brand. I was responding by attempting to point out Rotella is SOPUS, not Chevron...unlike Havoline. The article I was referencing was talking about consolidation of all of all those oddball Texaco brands. It seems it was correct, as Texaco's Ursa HDEO didn't survive while Havoline did.

If you really want to know....do a VOA on both oils and see what is in their add packs. Tuf Oil and Lubro Moly sales should go up with people searching for large does of Moly, as additives, at their OCI.

I have 5 quarts of Havoline 10W40 (sm rated),a case of Formula Shell 10W40 (sn rated) and 5 and a half quarts of Mobil 1 10W40HM (sn rated) in my stash. My oci is gonna be coming up in a couple of weeks and I`m trying to decide which one to use. I`m dropping off an oil sample from my last oci of M1 10W40HM (the older sm rated) here in just a few min.

I really do like Havoline, it seems like a great oil. However, I can no longer use the DS in our vehicles due to Dexos 1 requirement. I still use it in the Lawnmower and snowblower though.
