I'm going to do an oil change on the weekend. I picked up a 4.4 liter jug of Maxlife 5w30 at Canadian Tire. I'm kinda stuck on a filter choice. Should I just go with what the parts counter book recommends, or is there a bigger filter that'll fit? The called-for filter looks fairly big around, but it's kinda stubby in length. Would the filter for the old Ford 5 liter V8 fit? I'll be getting the filter at Carquest.

55, there really aren't any filters that are interchangeable with the Motorcraft FL820S your motor calls for, and no, the old 5.0 filter (FL1A) won't work...different threads...sorry.

On a side note, check out www.crownvic.net and www.crownvic.us ...both of those sites have a wealth of info about your car.

I think, if you have the room, this works for your engine. It's more along the line of a FL1A sized filter in the right thread and gasket size. The bypass valve is slightly higher ..but I doubt you'll be leaving it in service long enough to worry about it. Someone else had found a longer version ..but it's really not commonly upgraded due to the space limitations that many Ford products appear to be subject to

Theses are WIX/NAPA numbers for the sake of your CarQuest cross reference. The last CarQuest I used carried the WIX line up in their preferred (upper) filters. Just knock off the "5" and that's the NAPA number.

The LF3315 is a taller version, but it is a paper version.
It is only
95% @ 30m and
30% @ 10m
it only flows 6.87 gallons p/m

The LF16002 is a synthetic media version "stratapore" filter
Its 100% @ 30m
73% @ 10m
and flows 18.5gpm!

I dont know what the LF16002 crosses to, or if the same number in another filter is the ame eficiancy. In Fleetguard it is the only synthetic filter in that thread.
Fleetguard has a bypass filter in those threads!
Laters, SEAN!
