What are your driving pet peeves?

Drivers that seem to be in a mad rush, often using all 5 lanes (6 if you count the turn off lane) to try to get around traffic on I-95.

That's LEGAL?

It sure is and that is one of the benefits of living in California as a motorcyclist.

Read this:

""Lane splitting" is what someone does when he or she rides their motorcycle in between slow-moving cars on a freeway. The article says that this practice goes way back to the days when all motorcycles had air-cooled engines, and needed to keep moving to prevent overheating.

I suppose there's some truth to that, though today, many air-cooled motorcycles don't overheat when stopped on freeways.

The reason why California remains as the only state in the union to allow lane-splitting is because of safety.

Several years ago, lawmakers in Sacramento drafted a bill to make lane-splitting illegal, thinking it would save more lives. However, the California Highway Patrol lobbied against the bill, on grounds that it cause more bikers to die.

That is, if motorcyclists were forced to wait behind slow moving or stopped vehicles, they run the risk of getting rear-ended by other vehicles. This happens all too often on freeways, where drivers fail to pay attention to stopped traffic up ahead. Rear ending a motorcycle is almost always fatal for the biker.

That's why the CHP wants bikers to split lanes, to protect them from drivers not paying attention.

The CHP used accident fatality data compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to show that a frequent cause of deaths in motorcycle accidents in other states are car drivers rear-ending motorcycles.

That's why the California State Legislature changed its mind and allowed lane-splitting to remain legal.

I put about 30,000 miles each year on my two motorcycles. I've witnessed many "rear-end" accidents between two cars on the freeway. When a car gets rear-ended, the driver usually survives. But when it happens to a motorcycle, the biker almost always dies. If lane-splitting were legal in all 50 states, a lot more people would be alive today."

Come try that in New York, Id love to write you a slew of summonses. More then half the people I stop on Motorcycles end up being unlicensed, uninsured, suspended.

It's illegal in New York.

Anyone who breaks the law there deserves the ticket.

You should go bust those Orange County Chopper guys for not wearing helmets on public roads on national television.

Why would you love to write me a slew of summonses? I have a valid motorcycle endorsement, insurance, and registration.

If it's legal to lane split in California (with the apparent backing of the California Highway Patrol whose motor officers also practice lane splitting) why would I not want to take advantage of a proven safer method of maneuvering in traffic in a state where I reside?

I've been riding motorcycles for over 20 years with 0 incidents.

Again LANE SPLITTING IN CALIFORNIA IS LEGAL if performed in a safe and prudent manner.

Little chip on your shoulder? I've been riding motorcycles in NY Metro area for over 25 years and I frequently lane-share through stopped traffic on multi-lane roads at a reasonable and prudent speed or filter to the head of a long que at traffic lights. It's safer for me and has zero impact on other motorists.

My riding style is designed to maximize MY safety against the slew of brain-dead cell-phone-talking, GPS viewing, texting cagers that I deal with on a daily basis. Please understand, that if some of my actions violate the letter of the law, they are not endagering anyone and should be viewed through common-sense glasses, not a personal vendetta against the motorcyclist.

3 things:

1. Throwing trash out

2. People who have dogs in the back of pick up trucks

3. GLN - Green Light Narcolepsy...people who sleep at the green light and don't move.

I hate it when a conversation goes "motorcycle".

Anyone that uses the term "cage" in any way, shape, or form when referencing a car should be flogged in public.

I see a higher percentage of idiots on two wheels compared to "cagers". You know..stuff like wheelies, harley riders constantly popping the throttle at stop lights, lane splitting when illegal etc...etc...

My pet peeve is that people drive too much in the right lane (check out my sig). While on should keep to the right as much as possible, it should not be at the expense of safety.

I often come across a bunch of cars in the right lane all tailgating one another while there are free lanes beside them. If there is too much traffic in the right lane to be able to maintain a safe distance from the car in front of you then move over to a less travelled lane.

In urban areas the right lane slows down near on and off ramps. If you do not want to be slowed down then move left. I will sometimes have to slow down a vehicle behind me when I am merging, especially if I am heavily loaded, but I really don't feel guilty about it.

Sometimes there is a big line of cars in the right lane, waiting to exit right. You will frequently find people spending minutes in the right lane in the midst of all the traffic and they will eventually go on straight thru intead of exiting. They could have saved time by moving left. Not only are they wasting their own time but they are adding to the congestion in the right lane and slowing everybody else down

LOL.... "cagers"... I've never heard that term before. Reminds me of the kids on another forum I frequent who refer to drivers of cars with automatic transmissions as "slushies". Sort of like a fruity frozen beverage available at the local quickie mart.

(but you'll still comment....)
Why? Motorcylists have every right to share the road just like any other vehicle.
(Wife won't let 'ya ride, huh?

Guilty! I have to agree the term is overused. Actually, the term comes from the structural "safety cage" concept originally developed by Volvo and now used by all auto manufacturers.

Absolutely. Getting a motorcycle (and a automobile) license is waaaay too easy. I hate obnoxious straight-pipes and dangerous riding too. My sport-tourers and sport-bikes have quiet exhausts. (I don't need to call attention to myself) Perhaps, you're more used to lousy driving by others and the unsafe rider just stands out more?

Regarding low speed lane-splitting, the frustration that many autoists (better?) seem to have is that the motorcyclist isn't experiencing the "shared-suffering" of the traffic jam along with the automobile-masses, even though the riders actions have no bearing on the delays.

But please try and remember, on a hot day when you can enjoy A/C, the only cooling for the rider is forward motion, and during a extended back-up, splitting can be the difference between heat-stroke and a just another hot riding day.

I'm sure I will ruffle a few feathers with this one... well... go ahead and be ruffled.

Today I'm driving along in the left most, yes LEFT most, lane of a multi-lane highway at the speed limit.

At first I have one car on my tail and he obviously wants me to move right... nope not moving right. So he moves right, passes on the right and cuts right in... in front of me. Ok.

The another car comes up on my rear bumper... same thing happens.

I am NOT moving over to the right lane when I need to take a left turn off this multi-lane highway in a few hundred feet.

Apparently these boneheaded tailgater left lane showboats don't understand this concept... the only concept they seem to understand is the I am slowing them down... on their way to the next big box store where they can empty their wallet and load up their credit cards.
lol.gif

I knew I would need to turn left at a certain street and I wasn't about to try to negotiate getting into the left lane when the street sign came into vision. Didn't have the GPS on either... I could have anticipated in advance with that.

Ok... go ahead... party on about how I'm a left lane slowboat hog.

I've never really had much of a problem with people on motorcycles except for crotch rockets. A lot of times riders on those are weaving through traffic at 90+ MPH with a complete disregard for everyone else.

About half of crotch rocket riders and most other motorcycle riders are not a problem though. Most around here seem to obey traffic laws, even the speed limit. FWIW, I don't have a problem with lane splitting if it is done carefully.

Sounds like you were on a surface street; sure, one with multiple lanes, but not one which would be described as "limited access", like an Interstate highway. In your example, I'd say you were 100% in the right.

You're not a left lane slowboat hog if you're about to exit left. That's just tough luck for the speeders behind you. No one in their right mind should object to that. I just hope you wouldn't have acted the same way if it had been an emergency vehicle and not a speeder riding your bumper.

However, you need to understand something (if you don't already): Keeping the left lane clear isn't about speeders. It's to allow people to overtake slow moving vehicles or avoid accidents, and to keep a clear path for emergency vehicles that need to get through. If you're using it as just another lane when traffic isn't jammed, you're being pretty foolish. That's what people are talking about when they complain about left lane hogs.

True, people in WA are HORRIBLE about that on limited access highways, like I-5, I-90 and the like.

I hate people who think when you are towing a 28 foot 8500 lbs loaded fifth wheel you will be able to stop in the same amount of time they will so they cut you off or fill in the space you had in front of you incase you do have to stop quickly or that when you are going up a hill and you see me coming up behind you at the speed limit and you want to travel under it on a limited acces highway, this in not the time to hit the brakes to prove a point to me. Please just go the speed limit weather and traffic permiting or stay of the dang highway.

Oh, one more the Turn lane in Washington state is not for merging when pulling out of a place of business, parking lot etc. It is for turning into those places so you can stop. If you have to use that to "merge" into traffic drive the 500 feet to the exit with the Stop light.

As far as red light cameras go...Some were installed in some towns in Miami and in the Broward County area...There has been a major increase in rear end collisions as people slam on the brakes as the light is changing to amber.

Ive also been riding for years, and Ive also handled many many accidents several fatal involving bikes. Responsible riders are fine, lane splitting is not. A lot of things are legal in California that are not elsewhere and vice versa. However you may be right at my rank Im not expected to right summonses but will if I see someone lane splitting. However I stand by my statement at least 50% of the bike riders I encounter (on Long Island) are either uninsured, unregistered, unlicensed and they get treated accordingly by me and the people that work for me.

I wish you'd "try that" in my jurisdiction;
I'd dismiss them as fast as you could write them.
