What are you working on today?

Had a busy night at work. First had a Fishbein sewing machine jump time somewhere and start breaking needles, swapped it out with a rebuilt head and this one will be sent out for repairs. Then had a Wexxar case errector machine throw a control power fault......beat my head on it trying to find a bad transformer, fuse or something and it ended up being one of the access doors not shut all the way and the door switch not made . These machines rarely have problems so I'm not well versed in them simply due to the fact that I never see them. The factory programming is very good and nearly every fault is displayed on the touch screen and is easily dealt with at an operator level.

Last had a blow down blower for a dust collection system start to fail, it sounded like it had a couple teeth missing and upon removal of the inlet pipe found evidence of the lobes hitting. When we removed the drive belts you could feel way too much backlash in the gearbox. Back box had no oil in the sight glass and driven box had very little oil. Luckily we keep a spare so we had it swapped and running in about 6 hours. This is just a small assortment of the stuff I work on daily. Didn't even get to touch the backlog of wheeled equipment maintenance and repairs that I'm behind on.

Not working on anything right this min.. but in less than 1 week we'll be ordering a 32mm Hotchkis sway bar (which was made for the Ford Focus and will replace the factory 24mm sway bar on our Connect) and test fit the sway bar on our 2020 Connect.

Once the test fit have been deemed successful, we'll head over to our powder coater and have the sway bar powder coated a metallic blue to match the gifted Super-Pro end links.

Here's the projected outcome sometime late Jan early Feb when we have the shop install all the goods..

Wednesday
2018 Ford F-250
Changed engine oil, replaced air filter, rotated tires and checked brakes

1989 GMC Sierra 2500 light duty
Replaced radiator, radiator hoses, heater hoses, thermostat, flushed block and heater core, changed engine oil

2000 Silverado 5.3L/4L60E, 272,000 miles. No oil pressure 'til the engine was revved above 1,800 RPM on a cold start. On a hot start it would pickup oil pressure but was a little delayed. Owner wanted a rebuild. Advised him we should install a new oil pump & see what happens.

The pick-up tube O-ring was severely shrunken & pretty hard. New standard Melling pump, Pick-up tube O-ring, Front cover gasket, Front seal, & Oil pan gasket. PF46 filter & SuperTech 10w30 Advanced Synthetic.

32 psi Hot idle oil pressure after 5 full throttle freeway on-ramp pulls (10-70mph), And gains oil pressure immediately upon start-up. I'll monitor it tomorrow morning to see what a cold start does......Don't expect any issues.

Just a pick-up tube O-ring would've likely patched it well enough.....But the water pump gaskets were leaking 7 was pretty oily around the front cover.

Gen III/IV LSx engine tip.....Do not use Aluminum Carrier Water Pump Gaskets.....Use '97/'98 5.7L LS1 Paper Gaskets installed DRY, Even with slight imperfections on the block, These gaskets will hold for the life of the water pump.

Burnt 35R clutch?
Yes. Teflon seals was tired and burnt the clutch. Lots of cross leaks in the front carrier on air test. The piston seals were in their last legs too completely flattened out. I’ll post some more photos Saturday.

Strange that I can get parts for these, but reman transmission through ford on backorder with no ETA per my local dealer, and they are a HUGE volume dealer (Tasca ford).

I've had the opposite experience with water pump gaskets on those engines. I always use the aluminum ones. 🤔

What DON’T you do?

I’m so amazed with the activities and talents in this thread. Both of the kitchen cabinet builds are amazing, on top of all the vehicle/mechanical repair.

my 2 vehicles run, and aside from leaking cab lights (aluminum f-150, so yeah) the cars are good.

my creative move for the day is a 3D print to wall-mount computer speakers besides the big office wall screens for a low budget office conference setup. I’ve said it before, if they’d had this stuff when I was in high school, I might not have noticed girls.

i mean, maybe.

What DON’T you do?
Not much it seems like. Had my head in a palletizer control box all night troubleshooting an E-stop that wasn't working. Now I'm headed to a tape machine that likely has a broken air switch inside and after that I have an auger down with some kind of issue.

I never worked on a LSx - but did GM not incorporate a FKM(Viton) or silicone sealing bead with the aluminum gaskets?

Correct, But the Viton/Silicone has a tendency shrink & separate from the carrier after a while & the gaskets will weep after the engine cools down. I believe GM & Mahle uses Viton & Fel-Pro uses Silicone. Can't say I really like paper matrix either, But they seem to perform well in this particular application if installed & torqued DRY.

Just finished my latest "work reading". I proofread and copy edit for several authors. Rather than having to go pay major sums for new books they are sent to me free and I'm paid to read them. Can't imagine a better "job".

Friday
1967 Ford Fairlane 500 with a 390
Replaced fuel pump and battery, changed oil

2009 Honda Odyssey
Replaced left rear wheel hub, replaced rear pads and rotors

2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
Replaced upper control arms, replaced left front wheel hub, changed oil

I took it easy today . I cleaned and vacuumed the inside of my truck and finalized some Medicare stuff before it kicks in next month .

Well it turns out that one of my heads has a crack in it and of course it is the one that had all the exhaust bolts cleanly removed. Seems there is a crack that runs about 3/16" below the valve seat, up over the top and then down into the spark plug hole. Learned this on Dec. 14th and went out to Asia on the 16th leaving the shop to see if he could locate another FE CA7E or CA8E head. Back and checked on the 4th and the shop had no luck. So now I am looking for a cylinder head
