What are you working on today?

The engine isn't permanently mounted, and can be easily removed with two bolts. The engine chassis is mounted on rubber blocks with four bolts to the dyno chassis. I suppose the entire unit bolted together could be called a dyno chassis.:)
Ohhhh I see! I’ve never seen one so I wasn’t sure. Thanks for explaining!

Cut out of work early today for eye exam. Went home, and buddy brought over his 17’ Ram 1500 regular cab HEMI for oil change. He had a AC DELCO E CORE PF 48 on it with QSUD 5w30. Put a Fram endurance he supplied and some more QSUP 5 20 in and on. 60,xxx on odometer. Said he had almost 8k on last OCI 😱😱😱

Fixing the Swisher brush mower. One of the staff bounced it and broke the hitch right off. In doing so, it tore out the ignition wires and broke the blade engagement cable. Can't be too hard on the staff, we have had the hitch retaining bolts break often.

Drilled it out to mount bigger, heavier duty bolts. Crimped on new wire connectors and locating a new cable.

I installed a new Motorcraft 2150 carburetor on my resto/mod 1986 Jeep CJ7. The good news is the carb looks great, installed beautifully and the engine started instantly. :) The bad news is the the fast idle has it at 2,800 rpm and I need advice on how to adjust it down to 1,500 rpm. I've opened a topic under the Maintenance area to get help also! Thank you for any help you can send my way!

Yesterday my friend and I went to pick up a wrecked 2002 Silverado that he wants the engine out of. Engine runs good, has good oil pressure, transmission takes gear and truck moves. Was an all day trip due to distance, but it was nice to get out and ride the roads while getting paid for it. 😁

Another day of not doing much at work because the work flow has been slow. I think it’s to do with our owners keep raising prices. Oil change on a 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo that thing was leaking from everywhere possible lol. The guy showed up with it and said he wanted it and his BMW done. Boss asked me which one I’d prefer to do I said the Monte Carlo any day. Customer provided his own oil and filter so he only had to pay labor for the oil changes. Which come to about $45 or so a vehicle I’m estimating but I don’t know. He ended up bringing the wrong oil filter for the BMW so we had to wait on him to drive a couple towns over to find the right one. That tied up a tech and lift because he had already drained it and threw the filter away. He would not accept our ACDelco filter from our Chevy parts department because he wanted a base model Fram that was $3 cheaper. The tech had to borrow all my tools for the BMW because he didn’t have the tool for the oil filter. The Monte Carlo wasn’t bad to do just annoying cleaning up the filter mess. We aren’t allowed to turn people away at my dealership even if say something like a Ford showed up then though it’s Toyota building we have to take them which is why we had to accept these two. Other than the Monte Carlo the only thing I did was fill up the sign holders with sand and fixed the floor machine for the 10th time. Hopefully our prices go back to normal soon so more work will come in. Our labor rate is $180 and oil change is $79.99 for the lowest price one.
That burns my arse..........
Two years ago, I was looking around as my friend were talking about labor rates.
In my area machine shops were paying $17 an hour for topflight machinist. They wonder why they can't get anyone.
You could sit home and make several hundred $$$ a day piddling on small parts yourself. $180.... RIP!

Hey this is a beautiful work here… fabulous. Hopefully it’s an idle speed screw or perhaps a vacuum leak and it’s running ok because it’s too rich.

one question... I’m sorry but it caught my eye. Is that a red wire nut poking out of the yellow split loom? There might be a better connector for auto use?

Today was pretty busy at work. Probably because everyone is on vacation and quit lol. So there is more work to go around. Done brakes and oil changes. That was really it but a lot of it. At least it wasn’t slow as far as work goes but the day and week has drug on and drug on. Hopefully tomorrow there will be real work coming in. I’m trying to get moved to Subaru but I haven’t had a chance to talk to the boss. They haven’t been busy either with our ridiculous labor rate but still better than working on and dealing with Toyota. At least my boss stood up for us today when a customer wanted to stand over us while we worked on his car because it was new and he said accidents can happen.

Now to decide where to eat lunch tomorrow the Chinese buffet or Long John Silvers. Both sound amazing. Lol. Someone who is quitting brought me a Coors Banquet lol. They told me I was the only one in the shop who deserved one lol.

Got that 02 Silverado unloaded this morning and set to removing the engine. It's out, on a stand, and I'm awaiting instruction on whether I'm going to reseal it or if it's going to the machine shop for a rebuild. It's a 170k 5.3 he plans to eventually install in a 70 Monte Carlo with a 4L60.

Also have a 1996 GMC Sierra 1500 in for a radiator, oil cooler lines, oil cooler mount seals and an oil change. I got as far as removing the radiator. Piddle with it tomorrow.

2016 Mustang GT350-R.....A/C Compressor, Condenser/Dryer, Expansion Valve, Flushed the Evaporator & Lines. This isn't the first Compressor failure & the car only has 19,000 miles. Advised the owner to turn the A/C off when beating on the car.
Neat car, Makes you want to beat-on it....Not mine so I refrained.

1956 Chevy 210 Sedan, Cammed LQ4 6.0L & a 4L60E swapped in.....Reverse & 2nd Gear only, But will start in 1st if the shifter is placed in Manual Low. DTC P1860 (TCC PWM Solenoid Circuit fault) present.

The restoration shop that built the car contacted me, I've built a few Powerglides, TH350's, & TH400's for them over the years, They're just now getting into LSx Swaps. Said they had a couple swap specialist diagnose it, Harness has been checked numerous times, PCM has been flashed twice.
The owner of the car supplied the trans, So he trailered it to the trans shop that built it, They installed a standalone controller & thoroughly checked the trans.....Shifts fine & TCC locks.

The Restoration Shop & the Owner of the car are at their wits end with the finger pointing, The shop wanted me to come to their shop, Not going to happen.....All my equipment is here. Out of curiosity I asked if the car can be placed on a hoist....All the hoists are occupied.
Guess the "Swap Specialist" were trying to diagnose this on the ground/car on jack stands?

Car finally got dropped off yesterday after 3 weeks & 14 phone conversations, Good thing because at this point I didn't want to waste my time talking about it anymore....

Test drove it.....Transmission is shifting!!!! :ROFLMAO:
Checked DTC's.....Has a P1860 & P1810, P1810 is for the Pressure Switch Assembly Rationality. Cleared the DTC's......It now has 2nd & Reverse only with 1st Gear only in Manual Low.
Monitored the pressure switch PID's....They're all Hi no matter the shifter position.

Pulled the trans pan so I could back-ground the Pressure Switch circuits, No change on the Scan Tool PID's.

Commanded the TCC PWM Solenoid on.....No click. Solenoid has power & the power passes through the Solenoid Winding. No ground signal from the PCM. Solenoid clicks if power & Ground are applied using my 4L60E/4L80E test harness.

I would usually start at the PCM, But the PCM is under the passenger seat.

Decided to pop the lock/cover out of the Trans Connector, Had 4 terminals pushed out, 3 for the Pressure Switches & the TCC PWM Solenoid.

Trying to reseat the terminals in the connector was unsuccessful, It's a Chinese connecter, A used OE Delphi connector fixed it!!

Beautiful car. '56 is second best looking of the 3, after the '55 which is absolutely best looking. Both throw shade on the '57 though which is sad since I'm a '57 also. Interesting story. I don't understand half of it but I like reading these and hearing about the experiences of you extra smart mechanically guys. Reminds me of my dad. He was an ok mechanic but was an exceptional doctor. Many of his colleagues would call him to discuss puzzling cases and he'd know just what wasn't right. So I like reading these even if I don't understand some of it.

Figuring out occasionally surging/loping idle. Can't quite track it down. Car runs smooth, it's just the idle.. sometimes.. YouTube has different opinions on ATF in gas... that's run through now...

Starting with cleaning intake items.

Should clear the CEL but it can stay on........
