What are you working on today?

1970 International Scout/800A with a 304/Borg Warner T39 Auto. Also known as a Borg Warner Model 11.

Complaint of No Park, Dropped the pan & valve body/2nd servo body, Found the parking pawl relay mechanism sitting on top on the valve body....Came apart because the Pawl Fulcrum Return Spring which also holds the relay pins in place broke.

This part by itself is near impossible to source except for this place called Charlietranny.com, He wants $96 plus $14 shipping. I was about to swallow that....But after looking at some super common GM transmission parts he had for sale at 4X market value, I came to the conclusion that he's gouging for no reason & I'm not going to participate in it.

Located a Borg Warner Model 35 out of a '78 Jaguar XJ-6 for $85, This unit is a vastly different but the Parking Pawl stuff is the same. Thanks goes out to John @ John's Cars in Dallas TX. If you need any Jaguar parts or GM V8 Jaguar swap parts/kits....Give him a call.

Temporarily assembled the Pawl Relay mechanism just to make sure nothing is bent, Works fine just need the spring, Going to go get the Model 35 unit in the next few days as time allows.

I noticed the hose clamp filling in for the 2nd Servo adjusting screw jamb nut....That will be corrected as well.

Is there a cross reference for these items or is it just something you know from experience? I would’ve never guessed that a Scout and a Jag would have anything in common especially a transmission part.

Yup still working on it.. Leveling cabinets or building drawers, there's words I could say for it but don't want to take a vacation. Took forever to get that corner cabinet by the sink at least decent. There's a 1/2 difference along that wall, the ding dong that replaced the floor didn't do as good job as he thought 😂 Probably no one will notice. It's perfectly level side to side. Tried to get a very small slope towards the front but didn't get it quite perfect but it'll do. Still better that the cabinets before, you couldn't place anything round on them or they'd roll off. Went a little crazy and used lag bolts, the grade 8s probably would of worked but I had the bolts so why not.. overkill.

Drawers, doors and lazy Susan's tomorrow. Gotta say again Ikea makes it pretty easy, the drawers were actually pretty simple compared to the closet organizer we got from Lowe's.

How does sleeping work? Do you shut it all down and go lights out, or do you let it run for hvac, or use of one those auxiliary units, the pony pac or something like that?
This truck isn’t set up with a bunk heater or apu and I don’t spend enough nights in it to justify the cost. A new APU is $15-20k for perspective. When it’s moderate like 40s to 60s I don’t run it I just shut it all down. Last night it was in the upper 20s and I needed just a little heat to be comfortable so I ran the truck all night. You run them on high idle, this particular engine likes 900 rpm. That keeps oil pressure at 50psi, coolant temperature up and the exhaust temperature high enough that is doesn’t slobber. My main concern was the air dryer freezing up because I had fought it the day before so running it all night was more of a necessity. Fuel burn is a little under 0.8 gallon per hour if I remember correctly.

Once you get used to sleeping in a running truck it’s really peaceful. I sleep better in it even with trucks coming and going than I do at home most of the time. It’s got 6” straight pipes so you don’t hear most of whatever is going on outside.

No cross reference as this stuff is beyond obsolete, I just know that Jaguar XJ-6's used Borg Warner autos & found a parts break down. Helps that I know John's Cars has hundreds of them laying around. Jaguar XJ-12 & XJS cars use a Hydramatic TH400.....Fantastic source for like new Hard Parts if you have a bombed out GM TH400!

Before ZF.....Borg Warner/Aisin Warner, Hydramatic, & Allison were the go-to for automatics if you didn't manufacture one in-house.
AMC/Jeep, Ford, Jaguar, International, Toyota, Nissan/Datsun, Triumph, Rover, Volvo & several other manufacturers used Borg Warner units.

Of coarse Ford & Nissan developed their own units, And Toyota took over Borg Warner's automatic division becoming Aisin-Warner.

There was a time when Ford bought Hydramatics from GM. AMC/Jeep, Isuzu, Volvo, BMW, Rolls Royce, Bentley, & Aston Martin were Hydramatic customers.

Knocked off both driver’s side mirrors onto a pole while steering right while backing up. Stopped at a Freightliner parts store to install new mirrors before jumping on the freeway since I’m basically blind without side mirrors.

Filed incident report and billed the parts cost to the company. Awaiting verdict from the supervisor.

I've seen you mention apprentice(s)....I hope you're passing this knowledge to someone because you are a dying breed.

I wish I could tolerate TX, I'd work for you for free and sweep floors and clean bathrooms just to absorb all the info I could.

No wonder there was an uncanny resemblance between BWs and AWs in the 1980s, I remember seeing the Aisin-Warner nameplate and Borg-Warner logo cast on a A43DE on an old Cressida my parents had. I think Jatco also used a lot of BW’s patents as well. Jatco being originally a JV between Nissan/Subaru(then controlled by Hitachi) and Mazda. Mercedes built their own stuff, but used Allison or Voith for their truck/bus lineups. Saab also used BWs, then Aisin once they started being less geeky with using shared GM platforms.

Little more progress tonight. All 6 drawers are done and had to redo the face of the first one, have to pay attention to the directions close because the face mounting locations change based on where the drawer is. Yuck. That corner door hinges were interesting. Tomorrow will be a day off from it, work party after work and things might be a bit hazy.

I replaced the oven timer/controller for the outlaws at our vacation home in Florida. The oven was not always reaching the correct high temperature, so they called someone to do a diagnostic ($100). They were told by a bonehead that the oven cannot be repaired because Kenmore (2014 oven) no longer exists :ROFLMAO: . I obviously found the part, ordered it, had it shipped, and installed it today.

Stupid question but why not paint the walls before hanging the cabinets?

DIY Front Disc Pads, Inner Oil Seals, etc

If you like getting dirty :)

1996 Prevost bus/mh with Meritor brakes.
My front disc brake slide pins were sticking out past the boss less than .250". When new the pin sticks out about .625. Mx manual section 12 page 17 &18 says to pull the wheel and inspect, So, that's what I did. The inner pad had about .200" of fiction material remaining. When new it has .910". The outer had .300" remaining. When new it has .570".

Since these Rockwell/Meritor disc brakes are a single (inner) piston design, the inner pad wears much faster than the outer. That's why the inner pad is so much thicker than the outer when new.

While I had the caliper off:
Also removed hub/rotor
cleaned bearings, slide pins, bushings, replaced o-rings on pins
Lubed caliper, slide pin, bushings, slack adjuster, tie rod, king pin
Changed frt right inner oil seal w/Scotseal SKF # 35066 = Prevost# 610870
Changed outer gear oil hubcap w/Road King 343-4024 = Stemco 343-4024 = Prevost# 611252
replaced brake pads w/new – Meritor# KIT15615PM or SR27017173 per wheel, or Meritor# KIT15625 per axle.
replenished gearoil with Amsoil SVG 75w-90
reassembled everything
set wheel bearing pre-load/end play to .002”
adjusted brake
torqued lugs nuts 450 ft lbs
Test drove it

Will do the same to the left front soon. Drive and tag axle brakes still have plenty of meat.

Don't tackle this job if you don't like getting dirty :)

Back splash will cover it except behind the frig. That'll get a little paint. The cabinets all have backs. The ceiling is getting tiles that extend to the front of the house through the living room, the living room ceiling has some flaws.

Very nice through job. I prefer drum brakes when it comes to air but that’s only because that’s what I’ve worked on my entire career. Nice job with the dial indicator, you don’t see that often enough.

Thursday
2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
Replaced front strut assemblies and rear shocks, replaced rear wheel cylinders

2015 Chevrolet Equinox 4 cylinder
Replaced front sway bar links, performed a BG EFR ring cleaning and changed engine oil

Do not do this! Do not do this! Do not do this!

2001 Toyota Tundra front coilovers with new Bilstein 5100's and top plate. There was so much preload on the top part of the coil spring that it was impossible to get the top nut on especially with new rubber bushings. Had to get a second spring compressor to squeeze the top down to get the nut on.
