What are you doing right now?

I wonder what that smoke is indicating.
What's the ambient temperature, and is that starting the engine cold?

This time of year, any vehicle here which is parked outside a heated garage will look the same initially, and might continue as long as the engine is running, if it's cold enough.

If that's the case, it's just steam caused due to condensation.

About 40°F. 55% Humidity. Car sat since last year (December.)

Did it eventually clear up? If so, and under those conditions, I'd say it is just steam due to condensation.

That part remains to be seen. I had to go to work.

Color and smell made us suspect oil in exhaust...

It could be oil. Not being there to see and smell it for myself, makes it a guessing game.

You mention a JDM engine a few posts back. If this is a newly installed JDM engine, there could certainly be some residual oil being burned off from the combustion chambers, or the exhaust system from either the old engine, possibly penetrating oils sprayed to loosen exhaust manifold fasteners, etc.

The big question is whether it eventually clears up or not. If it doesn't, then you'll have to investigate the cause.

I agree.

I could send you a video of why we were suspecting oil, if you like.

My think is similar to yours: It should clear up...

Did the smoke stop once the engine warmed up?

Apparently it didn't.

Guy is telling me new engine is misfiring, blinking CEL, blinking trans light (?) OR it's just over fueling the engine.

I want to see it tomorrow. Hopefully, it's a bad engine, take it out, get the refund, and go from there.

Looking for a car to get around in at this time.

Absolutely! Don't accept it if it has any issues.

Absolutely.

Not giving him any more money, either. Gave him $500 in labor in 2020 towards this, expecting a smaller bill when done (low remaining balance.) Guy does not tell me in advance how much it will be. This seems shady to me.

He gets to let the engine people refund him, INCLUDING THE $160 SHIPPING, If it is a bad engine.. and we go from there.

I am still thinking it will clear up
OR timing is off
OR it's overfueling

I want to see this car in the morning before I think about other cars.

surprised nobody saw the color of the smoke. Its a grey/black. I have a video but it contains my license plate so I didn't just throw it up. 2021 style. No.

We were smelling oil/carbon. Smelt kind of like burned crispy bacon. I mentioned oil smells good.

Why he doesn't disconnect the exhaust pre-CAT is beyond me.

This will be our last dance, I'm done with this guy. Once it's done...
