Well, I managed to get up to 259# on my 5'11" frame and that's bad if I want to be around in 20 years to see any grandkids, enjoy life as an empty nester, etc. So I've been working out three days a week and cutting back on portions, but not really avoiding any foods. I also want to get off my BP medication, and think that a combination of diet and exercise will help me do that.

So far, in the first month, I've lost 10 pounds officially today as I weighted 249# after lunch today.

My goal is 220#, which is only about 10# more than I weighed when I got out of the military 16 years ago.

Anyone else trying to drop a few and how are you doing?

I'm trying to drop a few. I should be 140, but somehow I got to 190. In the last 8 weeks, I've taken off 12 pounds.
Steady as she goes, captain, steady as she goes...
Just stick with it, avoid the occasional binge, tolerate the occasional hunger pangs, get used to eating totatoes and olives.

That's awesome man!

I lost 30 pounds last year, from 230 to 200. Did it by cutting out regular cola, went to diet cola. And avoiding fast food on a regular basis, and my biggest vice that I cut from my poor eating habits was no snacking late at night.

Java,

5'11" and 220 lbs is the goal? How big a frame do you have? The average guy your height with a medium build should be in the 160-190 lb range.

160# guy at 5'11" would be a strange twig. I'm sorry.

I'm sorry, but I'm only 5'8" and my body does freaky [censored] when I try to go that low.

Almost forgot - way to go Java!!!

i'm 6' 2" and need to weigh 200 lbs.

I have a long long way to go.

well done on losing some. And yeah i need to lose for the same reasons.

I must be the oddball at 5'7" and 130 lbs. My weight's been steady at that weight for years, so it must be what is right for my body.

Way to take charge, Java!

I lost a bunch of weight last year. I'm 6'5" and weighed 285 lbs. Got tired of my big gut hanging out there. Lost 60 lbs in 6 months, switched to diet cola and ate healthy food. No more fast food or snacking. I also did a lot of weight lifting, that helps more than anything. After a year I'm still lifting and maintaining my weight at 220 or so.

I'm 5'10,175 medium frame, and feel i could lose another 15 lbs. or so.
Besides eating better, try to incorporate at least 30 minutes of cardio, 4x a week. It helps a lot.

I am at 185 and should be in the 150's. I hit my late 20's and my metabolism slowed to nothing, and now I am working a desk job which was the final straw. (I had been installing satellite dishes for years while in college).

I've been cutting back on eating out, taking veggies to work to snack on and drinking diet pop and fresh water from the office cooler. I have also been working out several times a week, but I still binge on occasion and it has been sabotaging all of the good things I have been trying. I really need to buckle down and work at it.

Congrats to everyone who has worked so hard to lose. It isn't easy!

Does anyone have any easy to prepare, healthy meal ideas?

Wow we sound like a bunch of women! :)

Feb 2008 I was 195LBS.. Now I'm at 155 LBS..cut down mainly carbs and fat. I havent eaten any fast food in a little more than a year..I'm 5'8 in height..

People can weight the same [having the same height], but one can be much larger and unhealthier.
If the extra weight is adipose tissue [fat], it is of course no good.
If the weight is bone and muscle, it is a good thing.

At 6'2" and 220, most charts say I'm too heavy, but that is nonsense as I am in great shape.

Good luck and HANG IN THERE. You can do it!

My wife lost 125+, a couple years ago. She's kicked some serious tail. It took fortitude and she had to dig deep down to find the strength to carry on with her goal, but she did it.

I'll be starting to lose weight, about 75 big ones, starting this weekend. I lost 20 pounds and felt good right before my back threw itself out back in October. Hard to exercise when one can't walk! LOL

Hang in there!

I'm built strangely it seems. I have a 50" chest and a 38" waist. I'm 5'11" but only have a 30" inseam. We have a guy in the office who is 6'2" or 3" and I look him eye to eye when we are both seated, so that gives you an idea of the height of my torso. I fit loosely into 38 waist jeans and can squeeze into some of my old 36" waist jeans, but it's not a pretty sight.

When I was an officer in the Army, 16 years ago, back at 205-210# I could max out the PT test until they changed the standards in the middle of my 4 years in, but would get taped. I have an 18" neck, so that gives you some more idea about how I'm built. When I was a cadet, there was a Captain that gave me a hard time about my weight so for the initial PT test, I said sir, if I outrun you in the PT test, you have to promise me that you will not give me a hard time about my weight. And I maxed the pushups, the situps and ran two miles in 13:00 flat. He was quiet for the next 6 weeks when it came to my weight.

For those who say I should weigh 160-175 give or take, I think the Met Life tables are way out of date. I also know the military tables account for age and I'm well into the 40 and over category. When I was a young LT, doing PT 5 days a week, and playing hard on weekends I never dropped below 200#, so at 40+, I think 220 is a smart goal.

The last time I was below 200 was when I was on chemotherapy back in 1994. Frankly, I didn't look good then, LOL.

I consume very little alcohol, but burgers are my weakness, so I just have fewer, smaller, or maybe even turkey or boca burgers.

Right now, I'm just doing cardio to make sure my heart is in good shape. I did 6.11 miles on the cross trainer and treadmill yesterday burning 817 calories, keeping an average heart rate of 141 over the hour and a half I was working out.

If you see a guy who is 6 ft and weighs 140, he would be mighty skinny.

My father is 6' and weighed close to 240 in his early 40s. By (I know this is a cliche) changing his lifestyle over more than 15 years he is now about 150 and 77 years old. He never dieted (i.e tried to make x lbs reduction in y months) but increased his morning activities and spent more time doing stuff around the house.

I'm 6'3" and in the 240 range. If you believe the charts I'm overweight, but I'm all muscle-I work out with weights daily, jog, distance walk and do a lot of cardio. My routine blood work is nearly perfect, and my HDL cholesterol is over 100 because of healthy eating and exercise.

The real keys to weight loss are twofold. Eating habits-junk food/fast food are prohibited in our household. I can't stand to drive by a fast food joint-the smell makes me want to gag.

Toss out the pop, chips, processed foods, cookies and high fat foods. Make sure you plan to dedicate yourself to healthy eating habits for the rest of your life or you will put the weight back on.

Never, ever eat anything within 2 hours of going to bed. Don't drink alcohol during the weight loss phase either. The body processes alcohol before food so the food gets processed to fat.

Exercise-get moving. Get off the couch, turn the idiot box off and get moving. Park at the far end of the lot and force yourself to walk. Do lots of little things throughout the day that force you to move. Skip lunch and go walking, take the stairs rather than the elevator, stand up every 20 minutes and move around.

Once you do lose the weight you'll feel better than you have in years. And you'll look better without the giant gut and all the flab. Losing the weight is actually the easy part. Keeping it off long term is difficult and most people fail when they try.
