I was emptying an old box and found this letter from GM. If I recall, I sent an inquiry to the main GM office address. I remember being intrigued by ACDelco 10w40 having Starburst symbol, the only 10w40 I had seen with it.

10w-40 was what everyone used in the trailer park I grew up in. This was Florida in the 80's if that explains anything.

My dad swore Quaker State and Pennzoil would sludge your engine as he poured Texaco Havoline 10w-40 in his F100.

I now proudly run QS 5w30 in my old Subie.

Dad's don't always know what they are talking about.

Lots of motorcycle oils are 10w-40 as they know the shared transmission will shred them down to 10w-30 anyways.

Late night ramblings...I seem to forget I'm a lurker not a poster.

My quad runs 10w-40 but I swear by Rotella 15w-40 in that machine.

Ok time for bed.

Back in the 80's dad used Castrol 20w50 in everything. One day mom's Camaro 2.8 V6 EFI blew a radiator hose a few miles from the house. The car stalled out just as she pulled into the driveway and we all though she blew it up.

Next morning after dad fixed the hose it fired up like nothing happened. That car never missed a beat and ran like a scalded ape until rust ate it up.

During this time I believe we had an Apple IIe computer in the house.

Back in the “80s”? Yes, dad was right. Queue arguments….

I thought it was cool that I send a letter to their main contact address, end up getting a letter from one of their lubrication engineers. If you look up the guy’s name he’s on a bunch of papers. Simpler times man…
