I had to remove the coolant tank and the motor mount, then jack up the front of the engine for easier access. Nice quite WP now. The first pic is before jacking up the engine. The second is after. Notice how much more access there is.

You know it. This thing has had problems for several weeks now, but I thought it was the tensioner pulley. No water leaks, but just a slight noise at first. Then this last week it really got loud.

The second pic is at a differant angle and it is a little deceiving with that view. Actually I would say it's about 4 in.

Okay, I see now. The A/C piping should have given that away.

Hope it lasts good and long.

Did you take any pics of the pump, side-by-side old vs new?

Both pumps looked alike, but I didn't take a pic. The quality looked equal to the OEM.

While the OE pump may have failed relatively early, often times the replacements already have the issue (if any) addressed - sometimes it's just a fluke failure.

I agree. Just because the OE waterpump lasted 88k miles (which is not far from low average really) doesn't mean the replacement one won't last longer. You might get an aftermarket as good as the OE but the odds are usually against it. Aftermarket parts might costs less but they are usually a bigger gamble.

You don't always know if the OEM decides to cheapen their own part either.

I had a friend show me how on some 3100 engines, the steel impeller got replaced with a plastic one at one time. Plastic impellers are junk.

I'm sure this is it. Three bolt pulley as mine is. Glad to see it has an "O" ring instead of a gasket.

good design IMO. first time I saw an oring sealed WP was on a caseih 7140 (I think it was a cummins engine, not sure tho). I was thinking genius! Glad to see this making its way to the car industry.

Just be sure to clean where it seats really well and pre lube the oring with some clean oil or anti-freeze.

nothing wrong with aftermarket parts...

On mine, the OEM and replacement had a steel impeller.

Very true. The Ford Duratechs have a timing chain and the WP is outside the timing cover.
