While the OE pump may have failed relatively early, often times the replacements already have the issue (if any) addressed - sometimes it's just a fluke failure.
I agree. Just because the OE waterpump lasted 88k miles (which is not far from low average really) doesn't mean the replacement one won't last longer. You might get an aftermarket as good as the OE but the odds are usually against it. Aftermarket parts might costs less but they are usually a bigger gamble.
