It’s not steel. It’s aluminum, and it’s only 2oz heavier.

My wife’s PDP F series broke its MIM slide release in the first 100 rds. Other than that catastrophic failure and the unresponsiveness of Walther’s support, and the fact the lever itself is way too large for me, it seemed decent.
I have a compact frame 5 inch slide pdp. It is my favorite of the striker fired handguns and I have owned glocks m&ps vp9s p10s etc. Trigger is fantastic, love the grip, love the slide release, slide is very easy to grab, sights a good + red dot ready and never had any reliability issues.

Have you tried the newer flat face M&P trigger?
I have a shield plus with one. It is very nice but the pdp is definitely an upgrade. If you go performance center S&W I'd suspect it would be similar but i haven't used one. A friend of mine just bought a performance center m&p 2.0 metal yesterday so i may get a chance soon.

Thats the exact model he bought. I am still an M&P fan but i think the pdp can be found for a better value

The M&P metal’s trigger is better than the PDP, but the difference is so slight that, if it makes a difference for someone, that someone needs to get better.

I don't think I'm good enough to tell enough of a difference
so since the triggers are both great, it will basically come down to availability, hand feel, price. I can't find them in ranges for rent so not sure shooting them will be doable.

I have the PDP compact in my safe and 100 other pistols to compare it to. I hate the PDP honestly. The slide is FAT and huge. The bore axis is pretty high. The trigger is crunchy, but decent for a crunchy trigger. I hate what Walther has become. The P99 I still consider to be one of the best guns ever designed. The PDP is the next gen version of the P99.
For a night stand gun I would highly recommend a full size VP9 with 20 round mags.
For a conceal carry gun look at the 3.6 inch M&P 2.0 compact.

The newer Tisa are getting good reviews. I’ve not shot one but have handled and spoken to an owner who had higher end 1911’s and a favorable opinion. In my handling, seemed well made.
If I were looking to buy a 9mm 1911 Colt and dan Wesson would be my choices in that order. Cold Gold Cup Or Competition depending on features. DW PM9. I think both of these are going to push budget Failing either one of Those perhaps Springfield Armory if the still make 9mm.

I’ve got several Springfield Armory 1911s in .45 ACP and 10mm.
They are all well made, reliable guns.
The Range Officer is probably my favorite. Really accurate and pleasant to shoot. Upgrades include better sights (with a fiber optic front ), extended Beavertail, and a few other tweaks over the basic model. It’s very similar to the current “loaded” model.
The mil-spec model is a classic and faithful to the World War I original but at about 100 rounds, I start getting some hammer bite on my hand.

I would recommend a Springfield in a heartbeat. The loaded, Mil-spec, and Garrison models are all in your price range. If you are LE, First Responder, Veteran, or Military, the Springfield First Line offers a solid savings.
For me, the Garrison looks very attractive.
Almost bought one last month, but opted for a rifle instead...

I had a Range Officer in 9mm. It was a nice pistol, but it wasn't as nice of a pistol as a Colt. Ive got more than one super 38 colt with a 9mm barrel which is a good option too if you can get and fit the barrel.
A word about 1911/s in other than 45. Many of them use a ramped barrel (and there are 2 different types of ramp) VS properly forging and matching the frame to the proper dimensions for 10/40 or 9/38. I am not a fan of ramped barrels and would avoid them, every trouble child 1911 ive owned has had a ramped barrel and i don't think it's a coincidence. Ramped barrels are also not necessary in a properly dimensioned 1911 shooting "normal" ammunition. IF you were loading super or 9x23 to major power factor and shooting a lot of it i might be persuaded to entertain an argument about it. Even at that i shot a fair amount (thousands of rounds) of max load VV out of a standard barrel with no issues and my normal had load in both 9mm and super exceeds anything but specialty ammunition.
This is why my first choice would be Colt.
