I've had an itch for a 1911 platform for a few months. Doing some "research" and thinking about what I currently have, I landed on a full size (my CC is a 3.1" shield plus and 3 inch SW 686+), 9mm (cheaper to shoot), double stack.

The Tisas came up as a great entry 1911 with the features it brings. Optic cut, steel slide/frame with polymer grip module. Titanium firing pin/series 70 style, really nice trigger. The commander size one at my LGS was awesome in the hand. I found a Duty (5 inch) Gen 1 online for $592 after taxes, etc and got it. The Gen 2 are a couple hundred dollars more but you get iron sights, and bull barrel, but I'm good with this firearm. Bull barrel isn't needed for my use, and I new id put a dot, so fiber optic irons is not needed.

After 555 rounds, these are my impressions:

Super smooth shooter. Very accurate/more accurate than my abilities. No reliability issues through 500+ rounds. Trigger has broken in very nicely, very short and very crisp break. Very minimal reset, too. The fitment and finish seems great, especially for the price point. All the controls are firm/click well with no mush.

Zeroed my Osight SE today at 15 yards and was landing shots on top of each other if I did my part

Even had decent groups at 25 yards (top middle group).

Nice! Are there only certain optics that fit, or can you use what you want, like holosun or romeo1pro?

Looks like it shoots well for you, will the iron sights cowitness?

Enjoy!

It has an Holosun K/RMSc cut. So a lot of the holosun are direct fit.

Irons cowitness perfectly, which I prefer.

About 750 rounds down range without issue with 115 grain amd 124 grain FMJ as well as 124 grain HST HP. Osight red dot holding zero as well.

For anyone with experience on both Tisas and Rock Island 1911's - are the Tisas on par with the Rocks from 15 years ago?

I had a Rock Island plain model .45 GI-style manufactured about 2007-09 and it was a very impressive $325 pistol in a time where a "decent" 1911 would run you $600 for a Springfield Mil-Spec or $750 for a Colt (when Colt was really downhill)

Just curious, I don't plan on buying one but les Internyets are full of Tisas hype. Part of me wonders if that's just due to people not being familiar with the 1911 platform. A lot of cheaper 1911's (IMO) smoke the popular pistols of the last 20 or 30 years (thinking of poly striker guns when I say that.) just due to design.

This tisas is a double stack 1911 (2011) that has a modular grip. So different than the typical 1911.

Tisas has been around since 1993 and makes quality stuff overall. I'd say the tisas of today would beat RIA of 15 years ago since there are no MIM parts and forged steel is used.

I have both a Rock Island 9 MM 1911 from around 10 years ago. And I purchased a new Tisas GI model 1911 in .45 ACP about a year ago. They both are good, solid running handguns.

But for fit and finish the Tisas definitely has the edge. The Rock Island has a very crude finish. The Tisas has a much nicer overall finish. I have to admit the Rock Island has the best trigger of most any of my 1911's.

If I had to choose today, I would give the best all around review to the Tisas. It basically boils down to the Philippines vs Turkey. And there are a lot of nice guns coming out of Turkey these days.
