I remember we tried Tilapia once. If I remember it was kind of bland tasting but that might have been how the cook prepared it. Wife hasn't bought it for us so guess she prefers other fish. I know shes like lobster.
We generally have Salmon and Halibut for fish. Wife likes to smoke salmon too. Sturgeon a few times where we can get it. Striped bass on occasion. Trout on rare occasion too, the pink meat trout, not the store farm white meat.
I miss fresh caught c r a p p i e. She has cooked largemouth/smallmouth/spotted bass but been years.

Some folks are mentioning Tilapia are bottom feeders. Aren't catfish bottom feeders? Seems catfish sells well at the fish market.
I remember having blue cat once fresh from a local lake and seemed good to me. She used to cook snapper to.

When I worked in a supermarket, lots of fish came from Asia.

This surprised me a lot cause 2/3 Florida is surrounded by the ocean.

The few times that I made it, I marinated it to give it some taste.

I love it. Really mild non-fishy flavor. My sister and I went out to eat last weekend and she got fish (made with Tilapia) tacos at the Mexican restaurant we went to. It was delicious!! She says she makes it at home all the time. Bakes it in the oven seasoned only with salt, pepper, and butter. I may try to make it one night. I bet it would go good with asparagus and a baked potato.

She buys hers at HEB fresh from the market.

My dad would go to this nice grocery store a lot and kind got to know the employees a little bit. On weekends they would give free samples of different items to sell more of that product. One time they had tilapia has a sample and one of the employees suggested that he pass on the sample. Mentioning some of the negatives already mentioned here.

I looked at the tilapia at HEB last night. the pre-bagged frozen stuff says "A product of China" and their fresh market fillets says "From Costa Rica".

Walmart + food = NO

Hello Talapia lovers. That is my son, Robert, whom started this thread. He knew I was thinking about buying some and asked about them to you most helpful members. I wound up buying a 4lb. bag at Wal-Mart. I think they're very good. I plan on frying some this weekend. I will be using my fried catfish recipe. I soak the fillets in Crystal hot sauce for 1-2 days. I then use a 50/50 mix of Grey Poupon and Zatarains Creole mustard to coat the fish. I then roll them in Zatarains fish fry, fry them to a golden color, and then enjoy! C'EST SI BON, MON SHA'!

Any food products (especially meat) from China just scare me. I can't bring myself to buy them.

I Googled "bottom feeding fish unsafe" and there is a lot of conflicting information. One article listed these species as bottom feeders:

Halibut
Flounder
Plaice
Sole
Eel
Cod
Haddock
Bass
Grouper
Carp
Snapper
Sardines
Catfish
Shark
Another article stated that wild Tilapia are actually "middle feeders" and only bottom feed when necessary. Numerous articles pointed out that shrimp, crabs, lobster, etc. are all bottom feeders.

Is the bottom feeder thing just a myth? Whatever they eat is processed in their intestines before converted to protein. It's not like you are eating poop. Decades ago I fished Michigan's "pristine" Upper Peninsula lakes, only to later find out that many were contaminated with Mercury.

Fry them up. If you worry about what you eat due to some kind of contamination keep in mind over 2000 Nukes were detonated between 1940s-1990s in the ocean, land, upper atmosphere. Everything is contaminated in some way. Live and don't sweat what you can't control.

Exactly. Especially if it's from another country.

So is catfish and that is some of the best stuff you can buy IMO.

The price certainly reflects it too. Obviously, look for the USA farm raised fillets. (Not the nuggets.)

Cajun season cooked over a bed of lemons are charcoal. OH MAN.

Rather eat a can of tuna salad:

1 can tuna

1 cup chopped celery

1-2 tomato diced

1 cup thin slice onion

chopped lettuce

you can add anything like watercress, bean sprouts or olives if desire.

Sprinkle with EVOO or what ever salad dressing you like.

Something like that rather than Tilapia.

Just to be fair about it http://www.lagrandeobserver.com/health/4...-healthier-than

Personally I prefer fresh caught sea water fish as I do know someone that knows fishermans that sell their catch at the fish market auctions.
