Walmart sells a 4 pound bag of these frozen in individual packages. My dad was thinking about buying a bag. We don't know what they taste like. Are they a real bad fishy taste?

I enjoy the taste and it's a very mild tasting fish. However, it's almost always farmed somewhere (usually China), that makes me too concerned to buy it. I'd rather not risk the exposure to chemicals/hormones used in tilapia fish farms.

On the bag it says pond raised. We only eat pond raised cat fish. There was a story about a man in Baton Rouge that went fishing at bayou Manchac and caught a cat fish with a rubber in his stomach. Thats why we dont eat bayou cat fish any more. Would you say they taste like cat fish?

I would look at the package and see if the Tilapia label says farm raised or wild caught. We do not buy farm raised fish as there is some question about what they feed them in the pond, could be chemical fish food,, buyer beware... Some frozen fish packaging reads Wild Caught. It is better and comes right out of the ocean or sea...but you can read up on it.

Check the package and if it says farm raised China try something else. A real fish market should set you up. Mine has fresh Salmon flown in from Alaska. Try some fresh Scallops. The fish market will have a nice selection. Walmart is not a place I would buy fish from. Most of it's Peru, China, and Vietnam. Tilapia is just a cheap fish. Most of it is farm raised and has little taste.

My dad can make gator taste like frog legs and deer meat taste like a beef roast and wild pig taste like a regular pork chop. He is a great cook. My grandfather taught him and so did my great grand mother too. The bag does say farm raised in China on it. Our neighbor has a bag of them and he just brought them over to show us. He gave us 2 to try. Wish us luck!

It's mild and light (not dense flesh), but to me it tastes like your average freshwater fish. Like pond water. I asked my wife to stop buying it because I was sick of experimenting with ways of preparing it.

DO NOT under any circumstances, buy farm raised in China fish. They have chicken farms built above the ponds. The fish eat the chicken poop and scraps left over that falls into the water. Very toxic environment, and not very healthy to eat. Farm raised is bad enough, but farm raised in China is a nightmare. I would probably eat farm raised in America fish (with a preference for wild caught). I do generally like tilapia, as it is a very mild fish without much flavor, and taste like whatever you season it with.

I told him what you said. He said thank you. He is baking the 2 pieces right now in the oven. He used lemon slices, lemon juice, SLAP YA MAMA seasoning and red onions. He wrapped them in foil and is baking them for 20 minutes on 350. c'est si bon.

I love talapia. If you have eaten at a buffet that has a white fish, it may be talapia.

I don't know that I'd go that far, but tilapia is not very flavorful. You can bread and pan fry it, and it's pretty good or you can sauce it up and bake it. Baked or broiled with only light seasoning, it really isn't all that good. Not bad, just kind of tasteless. There are many fish that are better to eat however you prepare them.

The issue with tilapia is contamination as mentioned above. It tastes fine. You'd think fish grown in controlled conditions would be safer than wild-caught but that's not the case with tilapia.

OK heres the verdict. Pops only seasoned them by sprinkling the SYM in his hand then using his fingers to barely sprinkle on one side of the fish. He boiled some small red tators in some Swamp Fire crawfish boil. The fish tasted real good. I could really taste it and I liked it. Im gonna miss his cooking when I leave. He made alligator snapping turtle sauce piquant Sunday night. Boy it was good!

Tilapia. They're bottom feeders, meaning anything that falls to the bottom is what they eat, then you eat. One of the worst type of fish you can eat as far as health goes.
