I don't recall the '73-'74 one but the '79 issues I do. You could only by gas on odd/even days based on license plate #. My parents had one odd and one even My job daily was to swap plates as needed so dad go and keep them full so he could go to work. Most places had limits on gallons.
We did a trip towing trailer with a '75 Ford LTD. We had 4-5 Five gallon gas cans inside the trailer in case we needed them. Probably not the safest thing. At the highway fuel stops he would get what he could then pulled around to the opposite side and did it again. We brought the other license plates in case we needed them. Memories!
