Walmart locking up batteries?

There have probably been instances of people just walking out the door with them.

I saw someone at Home Depot years ago, get busted for filling up a storage bin with spray paint cans. Looks innocuous if you have a storage bin in your cart, but with the top on, it is suspicious.

They just walked out the door but store security, apparently an undercover employee, followed them out, opened the bin and the guy took off.
That reminds me a a very old joke.

For years a guy would leave work with his lunch box on top of straw in a wheelbarrow.
Every time the guard checked, there was nothing under the straw, just his lunch box in there....

After many years, the guard was about to retire, and when he met the employee at the exit gate for the last time, he had to ask..
"I know you were taking something all these years, but I could never figure out what it was. Since this is my last day, I'd like to know.

The Employee relied,,,,
Wheelbarrows!

I've been TDY to Seymour-Johnson AFB many times over my career. When you said "Goldsboro" you answered your own question. The city is a cesspool with rampant crime and theft. Actually surprised Wal-Mart hasn't left.
Our son is currently stationed at Seymour-Johnson AFB. But going to another AFB in Louisiana next year. I am thinking it will be a poorer area than Goldsboro.

Yep.

I saw a guy walk out with a big screen TV and hopped into a waiting Ford Explorer.

Employees did nothing but watch the theft take place.
Employees are trained to only ask to check the receipt if the alarm at entrance goes off. Nothing else. The store security are trained to do more. But these days with video they can catch the thieves days later. Before they had to watch you walk out of the store with at item you did not pay for.

Most of the places around here have been securing the lithium batteries for years. Like the Sudafed that is locked up, it makes it slightly more difficult for DIY meth(amphetamine) makers to do some home cooking. I'd personally like to see them easier to steal so more could blow themselves up 😁.
I am talking about all the car batteries.

People walk/run out with stuff all the time, big or small. I worked in Vallejo for a bit and I think in a given year more stuff got stolen than sold haha. What a mess!

Retailers have all the metrics for what occurs at each store, and adjust according.

While there may be a correlation between an area's income and theft levels, theft is theft, and things are shoplifted from stores in wealthier areas as well.

If one store is locked down, thieves will simply proceed to the stores that aren't, until they are locked down as well.

Our local Walmart locks up the car batteries and a ton of other stuff. We live in a low-income area, so a lot of theft goes on.

Just realized that. Our local Wallys don't lock those up, but they aren't near any door where someone could just walk out with them. Now bicycles in the Garden Center right beside the fire exit? If we were bored, we'd go sit near that door (it was in the shade too), and wait for the bikes to come popping out, which didn't take long. The really out of shape thieves would just roll them back inside when they saw us, but the more athletic would try and ride off. They never got far 😁.

I think it's more of a staple food there, McDonald's has SPAM and rice meal there.
There is a lot written on the phenomenon. It’s too bad it’s high in sodium and fat because it makes a lot of sense. It requires no refrigeration which is a big plus in Hawaii and it’s been around long enough that multiple generations enjoyed it.

This locking up stuff for sale is getting really weird. A few months ago I went to our local CVS for some deodorant, and it was locked up behind a glass cabinet. Maybe between paying $1200 a month for cars, and $1,000 for phones, people have to steal the lesser things in life to get by.,,

My local dollar store has the deodorant behind a door that beeps when you open it. I can deal with that. Needing to find someone to unlock a cabinet is annoying.

I suspect deodorant is stolen to be resold.
