Wal-Mart Supertech is baaaaad stuff !

I will just comment on the antifreeze issue. I'm not aware of Supertech making Antifreeze, although that means nothing as my car and its predecessors are Asian, and if I'm going off label (like when I drain the Toyota Long Life in it now and put Peak in it) then its either to use Peak Extended Life or Zerex Asian.

I think anti-freeze is not something to skimp on and that if you're not going to go OEM, you should at least go with something made by a company recognized for making a known high quality antifreeze product; its not like oil, most of us are using antifreeze that is good for 3-5 years (depending on what it is), and Super Long Life is good even longer, before it needs changing.

Considering the time span involved, if money is to be saved, I don't see the sense in buying antifreeze made by a company I associate with oil and filters. Here you spend the extra few bucks, as unlike oil, antifreeze is not all the same (I'm oversimplifying with oil, but you're not going to do any harm to it by using whatever brand meets it SAE and API requirements, no matter the price of the oil so long as you stick to the correspondingly appropriate OCI).

J_mac, I think the best thing you got going for you is that you dont really "know" who makes Supertech stuff. For example, for Motor Oil, it could either be Warren (WPP,) or XOM (Exxon Mobil.) I actually rather liked SuperTech 10W-40 in my app. it seemed to be a THIN 40, and until and unless i find a better oil than that, SuperTech was the BEST one in my car.. MAYBE.

I would venture that ANTIFREEZE wouldnt FREEZE unless its like 034 Fahrenheit.. and that is why i say, Water is MUCH more likely.

Alot of people use Supertech because its "Good enough." Some dont buy it due to the Politics of Wal-Mart. I have no problem with it, if its the best Oil. I have two or three maybe four or five more Oils to give a shot, it all depends.. before i default back to Supertech, one grade thinner than my car's accepted use, as per Dr. Hass and CATERHAM.. im still all

about that, but i seem to be experiencing what they are saying in a favorable way. (One the engine passes its tests, that is.)

Hope this helps.

I stocked super-heck for years by the case when it was made by QS-Penn. now I have no idea who makes it, but I dont do oil changes anymore unless its part of an engine rebuild or larger issue but I cannot see it has gotten 'bad'

This is a nonsense point of view.

I agree. motor oil can and will be consumed by the engine.

transmission fluid can evap off the lighter fractions via the draft tube. but the sealed PS system? where did it go?

ps when you work on or add to a ford integral pump, you have to do a steering cycling procedure to 'burp' the system of air, you will get pink foam for a bit

After a long and expensive flushing regime with a name brand fluid everything was back to normal. I saved what was left of the suspect bottle for a few years in case there was a lawsuit that popped up over it, but never saw one.
About a year or so later my buddy bought Wal-Mart brand 50/50 mix antifreeze. Kept it in the trunk of his car because he had a slow coolant leak. When he needed it, he got it out of the trunk and the bottle was FROZEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

These two incidents told me to stay away from Wal-Mart branded petroleum products. Wonder what other catastrophes this sort of thing has caused?

You waited 6 years to inform us this.

SM is an API spec for engine oil.

Every bottle of Supertech engine oil has passed engine oil tests by the American Petroleum Institute. Most manufacturers specify an API spec in their owners manuals for fluid type.

Your average run of the mill car will run fine on supetech oil. Its when you get into higher end cars with extended drains, or more demanding applications, the manufacturer recommends a different oil spec.

Read your owners manual and see what you need.

In my area of the country Warren makes the bottles and the oil for supertech. Other areas of the country have indicated that Exxon Mobil is making the product.

Please don't put up posts based on your "feelings" or notions about a particular product until you have tried it and had a used oil sample sent to the lab, with a report to post on here.

I'll sleep better at night knowing that

All older Ford PS pumps use Type F ATF. Just because YOU screwed up and put the WRONG fluid in there, doesn't mean you should blame the fluid.

Supertech is made these days by Warren I believe. used oil analysis posted indicate its fine for a standard OCI, but a little light in TBN and additives for much more. But you are getting what you pay for and no more; the more costs extra but for those who still stick to shorter OCIs, its a perfectly acceptable choice.

Yup.

The Super Tech 10W-40 is VERY Thin, and is very hard to see on the dipstick.

The giveaway is the bottle. Its angular, not curved.

FWIW, the Super Tech 10W-40 XOM version is a fine oil.

I have also seen WPP(Warren Performance Products) 10W-40 bottles.. at different WalMarts, in different states.

Oddly, I have found the ST antifreeze, oil, etc made by Warren to be first rate. Especially the antifreeze is a long life formula. With all the rebates though, cheaper to use Prestone. The Mag1 website has descriptions.

API does not test every bottle. They test what is submitted by the manufacturer initially then do random spot checks to help ensure quality. ST was fined not too long ago for selling out of grade gear oil.

by whom? I cannot find any reference to this....

Lets use a little logic here.

Being as W/M is the largest retailer in the U.S.A. and also the world, and more than likely sells more product than just about anyone else, if there was a problem with ANY product they house brand it would be all over the Net, Local News, National News, World News. It would be worse than the FireStone fiesco a few years ago, or the Toyota brake issue last summer. It sure wouldn't involve 2 products purchased in W. Va.
