Wagon superiority thread

The Kia Soul is technically classed as a wagon, but I'd bet that's news to most people who own one.

I have a hard time with that one. Some time back I called the Subaru Outback a wagon and got lots of feedback on that as well. The Soul is a hatchback box if anything.

The Mazda CX-9 could be considered a wagon too.

For the love of God...the Kia is a CUV. Nobody in their right mind looks at that and says "station wagon".

The criteria for a station wagon should be ''do they do this in a sedan ?'' A station wagon is based on a sedan. The Euros also do vans based on a sedan,eg Ford Escort Van. Sedan based vans are great too - car from the B pillar forward, and all cargo space behind.

It is certainly one of them but you have to be careful - let's take my Golf Sportwagen - it's based on the Golf hatch, not a sedan. Used to be the Jetta Sportwagen was based on the Jetta sedan but to say my car isn't a station wagon based on this is strange. All of the "is it a station wagon" rules have some exceptions. Many hang their hat on the presence of a D pillar, but there are 4-door hatchbacks that have them that aren't station wagons. I think in end, it's the fact that it has to 1) be a car/based on a car platform/car in the manufacturer's lineup 2) have a cargo area w/D pillar that extends well past the r. wheel (could throw some math/numbers at that as the articles I lined do) and 3) has the have the right body height to window height proportions (again...like a car, not a CUV). Fiunally, at some point, it's just a station wagon if it looks like one but that is v. subjective..."I know a station wagon when I see it!" There is a FB group called "wagon elitist jerks" and the page turned into a dumpster fire/s-show b/c all it was was folks arguing about what is/isn't a station wagon plus folks with questionable station wagons joining and posting causing the page to further spiral out of control. This whole station wagon thing is serious business!

I don't think the Soul is a wagon either, but my daughter has one and the title actually says wagon. They are also classed as wagons on CarGurus I believe.

We had an 87 Caprice Estate Wagon for many years, now THAT was definitely a wagon. Lot of good family memories in it, everyone else was driving mini-vans but we were too broke and had our wagon. We lost little but status. The Euro Wagons by the German 4 still turn my crank, unfortunately rare as hen's teeth.

I had an Eagle as a winter vehicle until about 5 years ago when the tinworm finally got to be too much. Although those cars were rustproofed pretty well at the factory, 30 years of salted winter roads takes its toll. (It was my 2nd Eagle wagon, the first was totalled by a guy who ran a red light.)

Of course the Eagle has basically the same body as the Hornet Sportabout wagon.

My parents car growing up in White Mountains of NH from 1984-1994. The car was INCREDIBLE in snow and off-road. I was able to ford 12" deep river no issues with a bed of sand and rock to go to our favorite swimming area beach. I had in college for 4 years and never let me down. The 4.2L I6 Jeep motor coupled to some sort of Jeep AWD system in a jacked up AMC car. I believe we had 285k miles when it was done as my dad used as his non summer traveling New England salesman car.

Salut!

What the manufacturer classes it as is meaningless to me - and this shows why. I believe Subaru classifies the Outback as a crossover now but it's a wagon, shares sheet metal with the Legacy sedan.

Before I bought my '15 3 Series sedan, I was tempted by one CPO 3 Series wagon in dark chocolate brown with a tan interior. It was the lower-powered 320, I think, and it also looked sort of unfinished, with no chrome around the windows. But the wagon itself would have been neat to have.

I believe 320 take the 328 tune without any modifications, so there is power there, while still retaining excellent fuel economy. At least that is what my BMW friends told me, so what do I know... Would've been nice though.

Two things went against it for me: the price they were asking, and the lack of chrome. The car looked like a toy, you know, one of those cheap car toys where the company didn't add any trim. I like a certain amount of brightwork.

That said, if something happens to the LaCrosse before its time, and I can manage the finances for a BMW at that time, I'd certainly consider a wagon.

Not even close to what you are talking about but I always wanted a Chrysler 300C SRT8 Touring (Think Magnum with 300C Nose and Interior) like they sold in Europe.

The old RWD Volvo Turbo Wagons were kind of neat.

I own a 2017 VW Alltrack that is probably the most loved car that I have ever owned but will more than like get rid of it when the factory warranty is done because I can't stand the stress that the panoramic sunroof will eventually leak. Every time it rains I cross my fingers thinking "is it my turn".

Only a Subaru Outback can make green car look so good... One of the few that I've seen with the upper rear spoiler.

Originally a Boulder, Colorado car, it was then certified to be imported into Canada, then to Chicago.

Eh, keep your drains clean and it will be fine.
